I haven't had insurance in a verry loong time. So when I finally qualified for insurance through my job and had my choice of doctors,I opted to go see my fiance's primary care physician-- who is also a close family friend of his family. His diagnosis= ADD and IBS. He sent me off with a script for ritalin and bloodwork requests.
Since the dr. is a close family friend of my fiance's, I made a separate OB-Gyn appt. to avoid any awkwardness. After my exam my Ob-gyn tells me I'm a classic case PCOS and adds more blood work requests to the one my primary dr. ordered. I didn't call my primary dr. about the PCOS. Today he calls and leaves me a quick vm tells me that I am "incredibly healthy" and my cholesterol level is phenomenal (143). He said my suger was normal @ 93, my hormones all "excellent", no anemia, and my kidney and liver function is normal.
So now I'm confused. I don't know what any of these numbers mean. So now I don't have PCOS?
Also-- I'm wondering if the birth control I started last week is effecting the hormone level reading in my blood work? I started the pills and then forgot so I had to double up twice before the day of the blood work.
I'm scheduled for my ultrasound next week.
Argghhh. I feel like I've been on a roller coaster of emotions since this all began. Any advice or help appreciated!
I know one thing, and that is that hormones mess with hormones. So your birth control could have had something to do with your hormones. Sometimes birth control can cover up PCOS and make everything seem normal. At least I know a few people it has done that in. But once they stopped taking birth control, everything went down hill again.
My primary care doctor tested my hormones for PCOS and they came back normal, but I was still having issues, so she sent me to a gyno specialist. well he said I was a "classic PCOS" case and is doing a ultrasound etc. He said your hormones do not have to be abnormal to have PCOS.
I would go to the ultrasound and see what that shows you. GOOD LUCK!

I agree that the BCP can mask the levels and make them seem somewhat normal when they're not. The Pill isn't a cure for PCOS at all. It just helps with the symptoms in some people.
I'd trust the ob/gyn in this case because they are more apt to know more about PCOS.

The BCP probably did mess with your levels at least a little. However, even if they didn't...many women "pass" all the bloodwork, but still have PCOS. PCOS is generally diagnosed based on symptoms. So, if you have the symptoms, then most likely you have PCOS. I would trust your obgyn more than a regular gen. practitioner. Good luck and keep us updated.

Not officially ttc, but not preventing!
The things your PCP quoted to you, glucose, kidney & liver function, and cholesterol have very little or nothing to do with diagnosing PCOS. Did you tell him you suspected you had PCOS? Did he run a bloodwork panel to test for PCOS (probably what your gyn is going to run). That bloodwork includes testing fasting insulin and hormones.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I had my ultrasound today and met with my Gyno who says that while my bloodwork is all normal (this includes fasting insulin and hormones -- thanks for bringing that to my attention JosieFB)--- I have all the physical symptoms of PCOS and he is 100% in his diagnosis. He says that I'm just not "presenting metabolically." His solution-- stay on the pill and join weight watchers. I am at a loss people-- I seriously eat reallly really healthy (and I've been back to low carb since the dx) all veggies and protein and I workout everyday at a high intensity (5 mile runs/weigths/and now add yoga to the list)--- I don't know what else I can do to lose weight. I got so mad inside when he said WW-- not because it's not an amazing program--- but because I already pay very close attention to my diet to make sure it's balanced and healthy. I am not a hypochondriac or lazy--- there is something wrong here and I am really starting to feel completely hopeless.
He said my thyroid was on the low range of normal (maybe .83?) but that it is in the normal range. My mom is hypo (but aren't your levels supposed to be high then?) and grandma had virtually no detectable thyroid hormones at all--- so he said I could try synthroid if I wanted at a low dose-- but he didn't think it would do much. He refuses to put me on metformin because my bloodwork was all "normal." So WT#%#^4 can I do here-- I have PCOS -- but no way to deal except continue to work out and not lose any weight--- and then continue to feel even worse about myself and depressed when I see no results? I feel so defeated.
Ok.. ok... I must sound like a self-pitying brat--- but I have to vent somewhere--- my friends are sympathetic but they don't know what it's like and poor DF just feels at a loss for me. He knows how hard I try he is at the gym with me). This is affecting every facet of my life in a negative way.
Someone give me a bit of hope--- anyone have luck with just BCP and synthroid-- without the met?
What else can I possibly do without met to get my body back in balance??? I'm willing to try anything at this point!
ETA: That Dr. also prescribed me prescription strengt diretic to deal with the unbearable bloating--- has anyone else used this?
You do not sound like a brat at all! You just sound terribly frustrated!
I can tell you from personal experience that I did the Met for several years and I didn't lose the weight...which was extremely frustrating for me. It's not a guarantee by any means.
I am curious to know how much weight you need to lose? There are thin people out there who still have PCOS...but I will admit that losing the weight will certainly reduce the symptoms (if it doesnt cure it).
Also, what exactly does your diet consist of? I just recently cut almost ALL of the sugar out of my diet and I'm starting to notice a huge improvement...and that also includes any starch that turns to sugar too! So no bread either!
Just some thoughts!
Chin up!
