Hello everyone, my name is Monica and Im 24. I was just diagnosed with PCOS recently and my head is swimming with information!! My main concern is the whole birth control along with Metformin. If I am not trying to conceive just yet is it ok to be on a birth control while on Metformin? My doctor told me that if I'm not trying to get pregnant that I should be on BC because I could end up pregnant. But wouldn't that defeat the main purpose of the Metformin?? Or is it still ok to take because it will help with other symptoms? Help!
Metformin does increase your chances of getting pregnant, so if you're not interested in getting pregnant you should be on the pill.
If you're taking Aldactone, Spironolactone, or another androgen blocker along with the metformin, you should definitely be on the pill. Not doing so could result in a pregnancy and the child having birth defects.
The met should still help with symptoms, even if you are on bcp. I was on Cyclessa(bcp) when I took mine, and still lost weight and had my fasting sugar drop.

i took met to ttc last year ... but now that my DD is here i am taking met for another reason (symptoms) ... but met for most cysters will jump start your cycles and make you Ovulate so that is why your doc told you to be on BC also.
