I'm feeling really sad today. I woke up this morning and uncovered my pet lovebirds, Bob and Harry, and found poor Bob dead on the floor of the cage. I know he was old (I've had him for 10 years and he was an adult bird when I got him) but he was my favourite of the two, and he's been my little companion for so long. He's been around through all kinds of crap through my life.
And now I feel really bad because I don't think I want to keep Harry. I only got him as a companion for Bob, and I've never really been attached to him much. Plus I think it's just going to make me miserable having him there on his own, when I wish I still had Bob.
Is it wrong of me to feel this way? I have a friend who offered to take both of them some time ago when I thought I couldn't have them in my flat anymore. Would be mean of me to give him to her?
I know, this is kind of silly, they're only birds, but I live on my own so they've been my little companions for a long time!
Aww, I'm sorry for your loss. I understand how you feel!
I think it's ok for you to want to give up the other bird, if you think it will make you feel better. I don't know too much about birds, but I think Harry won't be "hurt" or anything, so I would say it's up to you.
HUGS!
::hugs:: so sorry to hear about your loss. . .I know that the death of a beloved companion pet can be very emotionally wrenching. I personally have recently lost a 6-year-old guinea pig who I've had since he was born, so I know what you're going through. Fortunately, I also became quite attached to his sister, and recently got her a new companion. As for Harry, I think that's up to you and what you think would be best for both you and him. How old is he? I might suggest giving him another chance to see whether you get attached to him, but I know that might seem cruel, in that it's almost like suggesting that he might be a "replacement" for Bob, which I know he never will be. But you never know. However, I think that for now, you need to grieve the loss of Bob, and then decide what to do with Harry later. Once again, I'm so sorry for your loss, and you, Bob, and Harry will all be in my prayers. Once again, ::HUGS::
I'm sorry that you lost your birdie hun. I know how hard it is to lose a loved pet. They really are more than just animals.
As for what to do, I don't know. Personally if it were me, I would keep Harry for a little longer. Maybe a month or two, just to see how it goes. If after that I still felt the same way, then I would send it to the friends. Good luck for whatever you decide

Just wanted to give ((hug)). Can you ask your friend to look after Harry for a little while just until you know how you feel. That way, there is nothing permanent about the situation and you can just take time to see how things go.
Thank you all ladies for your support. It's been a sad old day, poor Harry has been a lost little soul too. It's weird, but as soon as I put him in the other cage so I could deal with Bob (well, so my cute neighbour could deal with Bob - you'll have to see the Single Cysters thread to get that whole saga!) he had a very thorough bath - even though it's freezing cold here at the moment. It was just like he needed to cleanse himself, poor little thing.
Plus he's been twittering and tweeting to himself ALL day. He's never been that talkative before, unless Bob was stirring him up. I wonder what goes on in their little brains. He spent all night in that cage with his dead friend - poor Bob was quite stiff by the time I got to him.
Roses I think you've got a good idea there. I'm sure my friend would babysit him for awhile so I can make up my mind.
I am so sorry for your loss. I completley understand how attached we become to our beloved pets. I also think it would be a good idea to have your friend care for Harry until you can grieve for Bob and decide how you feel.
I agree with the babysitting idea.
I am sorry for the loss of little Bob.
It's surprising how even the smallest of creatures can endear themselves to us. A few weeks ago we had to have my son's little leopard gecko lizard (Manfred) "put down". When we buried the little body under the redwood trees in our backyard, I was surprised how sad I was and how much I cried, along with my son, who is 19. We blubbered like babies!

I am sorry for your loss. I have cats that I would be devastated if I lost. I have had one since I first moved out on my own and I have a strong bond with him.
I dont think you should feel bad about getting rid of the one you didnt bond with. Just make sure it gets a good home.
I think getting your neighbor to look after Harry for a bit is a good idea too. I think having both of them gone would be quite a shock.
