Unhappy So Sick!!

Hi! I started taking Met 4 days ago and I am sooo nauseated. No bowel issues just so sick to my stomach I can barely eat. I vomitted twice this morning and could not even stomach enough food to take the medicine. It seems like the mornings are the worst. Any suggestions?

I don't have any advice. Just wanted to say that I feel your pain. I also started Met 4 days ago. I had no s/e until today. My stomach has been upset all day.
Hopefully someone will post with some helpful suggestions for you.
Good luck.

Poor things, I feel for you. I was on met for 6 weeks and my gyno just took me off it, I was just too sick!!

BUT, it just doesn't suit some people, doesn't mean the same thing will happen to you. Check out the thread on met and food combo's. It's important to be careful what you eat, avoid fatty or sugary foods. Following a low GI food is the best idea. Also taking it with food is a good idea as well. Drink lots of water as well. Take it one day at a time! The gyno advised me that 2 weeks is the "normal" time to experience side effects, things should settle after that.

Good luck to you girls (((hugs)))

Are you taking the Meformin in the morning or late at night or both?

I take my Met different than most people suggest but it works for me:

I eat dinner around 5-6ish, have a protein snack around 7-8pm then take my Met right before I go to sleep. I have my pills ready for when I brush my teeth at night. I pop the dosage (all 1500 mgs) and then brush my teeth and go to bed. I wake up only very slightly nauseaus, and then I'm good to go the rest of the day. I'm not on extended release so I don't know how beneficial or harmful it is to take it all at once but it's the only way I can start the Met without getting severely ill. As it is, with this method, my own s/e's are *d* if I eat the wrong foods and gas. But most of the gas occurs while DH is not home, thank God.

I hope you find something that works for you. You may just need to adjust the time you take your Metformin, either day or night-whichever will work best for you.

ps. you may need to take a morning shooter of immodium or something of the like. Not the greatest breakfast in the world, but if it helps you to not be ill, you might have to add it into your morning routine.

Default work your way up

I was supposed to start on 1000mg in the morning for two weeks then add another 500mg in the evening. I couldn't do it. I was just sick. I went down to 500mg with breakfast and 500mg with dinner. I was stuck there for many weeks. My nurse told me I wouldn't likely have success, get pregnant, if I didn't up it to the full dose. I took the full dose for maybe two or three weeks and got pregnant. I was losing weight the whole time. Anyway, I'd have times where I'd just get frustrated and quit it for a day or two and then start up again. Work your way up SLOWLY, like 500mg once a day for two weeks, then add anther 500mg a day...etc. If your doc approves it.

Hang in there and good luck!

Becky

See it your Dr thinks the extended release version is right for you... I had horrible nausea with the regular kind, but the ER formulation was fine.

I've only been on Met for two days. I take 500mg with dinner, but I haven't worked up to a full dose of 1000mg. I feel a little sick in the morning, but it quickly subsides. It also didn't help that after only taking it for 2 days, I got my period this morning. I just had it 2 weeks ago, so I'm not really happy to get it again. I hope my hormones regulate soon.

Default thanks

Thanks girls. I am just going to hang in here for a couple weeks and if it does not get better then maybe ask for the ER. I did notice that taking it with a carb made the nausea tolerable.

Hang in there! I've noticed that unless I take mine directly with food it's fine but if I wait even ten minutes or so it bothers my stomach.
