so, what am I supposed to DO if my blood sugar is high?
I just got my diagnosis Friday, and have been testing my blood sugar several times each day. All weekend, my levels were right around 95-105. Then a few minutes ago, it's up to 120. Should I freak out? What should I do to get it back to 100-ish? Or is that not even the right goal?
Hey there, don't freak out. My diabetes is just now under control again but my highs were 580s and I was told...do nothing except not to exercise if your blood sugar is over 250 because it'll increase it. They said if below 250 - taking a 30 minute walk a day will lower your blood sugar quite a bit. I'm only on insulin twice a day before meals, along with metformin and just started byetta twice a day before meals and now having bloodsugars in normal ranges. You should ask your doctor for a plan, but at 120, thats barely the amount to be considered diabetic, the range between 100-120 can sometimes be considered pre-diabetic if fasting, but may not always be accurate. So again, no freaking out :-) Watch for cues that your blood sugar is up or down....learn to recognize how you feel when it does creep up and hopefully you'll never get to experience the higher hundreds-500s. Good luck!!

Don't panic, everything will be just fine. I was dx March 05. My sugar level on the glucose tolerance test got to 265. I believe that the dx for type 2 is a sugar level of 165 to 240 with the glucose tolerance test. I can't remember for sure..Anything below that is considered as pre-diabetic or insulin resistant...I can't remember for sure, so don't quote me on the numbers. They don't dx just by the fasting levels, at least my doctor doesn't. Don't panic. My fasting sugar level is 117 to 129. Still don't panic...Watch what you eat, exercise and you will be just fine. Did the doc tell you when to test? My doc said to test before meals and two hours after meals, but don't do it all the time, because it will drive you nuts. After you get it under control, test weekly, unless you feel like it may be high. Watch what you eat, take the medicine that the doc prescribed for you and exercise. You will be just fine, just read as much as you can and ask the doctor to send you to diabetic teaching classes. They were great and taught me a lot...let me know if you have any other questions. Just remember everything effects your sugar levels including stress, illness, lack of sleep, etc etc etc...best wishes...

Yes, actually, I think they are better. I have an average of 102, which sounds reasonable. I am looking forward to meeting with this diabetic nutritionist, though, so I can figure out exactly what I should aim for and what I should be concerned about...
Thanks!

just wondering if you've been put on any medications. i'm on 1500mg of met and my readings are still higher than that. i read in another post that the most important readings are after meals. i've been getting over 170 after one hour, when its supposed to be under 140. and around 130 at the second hour when it's supposed to be under 120.
I had been on met before, when I was not diabetic. But now that I've had my diagnosis, I am not on anything, because I also (the same day) got a diagnosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and high cholesterol. So I am waiting for my liver ultrasound before I start meds up again.

Thanks, Martina. The "You've got no symptoms, but it could kill ya!" thing is kind of a drag, I must admit. But, um, I guess it's a good thing I don't drink much

i don't think you really need to worry too much. considering you're not on any meds at all right now, you're readings are not that high. they're only slightly elevated. just watch what you eat and do some cardio.
