So what medications is everyone on? Would love feedback from everyone.
Hi gals. I've started a lot of new medicines, and I'm worried that my liver or kidneys are going to keel over or I'll get some horrible rare side effects... do you all know the feeling? But then again, I'm desperate to try everything to see if anything can improve my health. At one time I tried every antidepressant made and nothing helped with my depression, so I've given up there. And, I still want another medicine, that I am not going to go to a doctor to try to get, because its toooo expensive, and its a controlled substance, and I'm not sure if they would prescribe it to me. It's called Provigil, and I "borrowed" two from a friend, and each time I took it, I felt happier, more awake, and accomplished more. I'd say my biggest problem in life right now is sleeping toooo much, and always feeling exhausted. Has anyone tried anything that helps there? I literally sleep my life away. But anyway, my point of this poll was to find out what everyone's "on", and what you all think is working or not working for you in general, PCOS meds or not. I wonder how much we all have in common, so please post. Don't forget to list all your meds (and if you'd like herbal etc supplements too!). Thanks ladies!!
Currently taking:
Spironolactone (one 100mg tab 1x per day)(I'm also not sure if this is long-term safe, and I've been on it on and off for 8 years!)
Doxycycline (for acne)
Prevacid (for reflux)
Pravachol (high cholesterol)
Iron (for anemia)
Diane-35 - however I'm taking myself off this after the month, and going to try going without BCPs, as I think they are probably unhealthy. I just hope I will have a period without one, because a lot of times, I don't.
Acomplia - I'm thinking of starting this diet medicine, but it's not in the drug databases I can find and I do not know if it will interract with other meds I'm taking. Also, if I take anti-depressants again, since this does something with transmitters too I think - I don't know if its safe to take together, anyone know? Success/failures with this new medicine? I'm also thinking about trying Glucophage again, to lose weight, and to help with my high insulin, but last time I tried I was throwing up allll the time, always queasy, and had a bad metallic taste in my mouth... . I wish there were just one or two wonder drugs I could be on instead of all this. Do ya'll think I'm on too much? *hugs and kisses to all* Thank you, and I'll love to hear about what you all are on and for what too.
Spiro: 50 mg twice a day. I think this is working. I take it for unwanted hair growth and acne. Both problems seem to have gotten better.
Yasmin: I basically take Yasmin so I have a period every month. It also helps with the unwanted hair and acne. I haven't had any adverse reactions to it, and I love it. I seem to be much happier and less emotional than I was before.
I am not sure if this is related to PCOS or not but I also take:
Paxil: 20 mg per day. I had been taking this for about 4 years before I was diagnosed with PCOS. I have terrible anxiety and would have horrible, almost dibilitating, panic attacks. This has really helped me. My doctor also gave me a prescribtion for Clonopin witch I can take if I am having a panic attack. It really helps relax me.
LaurieAnne ~ Just a word of caution. If you are sexually active and are going to go off the BCP, make sure you use some other form of contraception. If there is even a possibility of becoming pregnant you should not take Spiro. This has serious side effects to unborn babies.

Thanks for the info, I'm glad paxil and yasmin is working for you... I had thought taking the spiro + yasmin was dangerous because they both have diuretic etc effects? I'm not sexually active, but thanks for the warning...:o). I WAS reallly wanting to know about the non PCOS meds and conditions everyone has, and to find out what we all have in common besides PCOS, so thanks for listing them! :o)
200mg spiro (taken 100mg twice a day)
2000mg metformin
300 mg cardizem cd (high blood pressure)
25mg HCTZ (high blood pressure)
10mg byetta (taken twice a day...sometimes only once or not at all)
Metformin 1000mg twice daily
Spironolactone 25mg at bedtime
Clonidine 0.1mg at bedtime
Requip 1mg at bedtime
Benzaclin (topical for acne)
Pepcid for reflux
I hate taking pills! Mine are in my signature, but there's one I haven't gotten around to adding.
I'm taking Lipram now to help with food digestion. It's okay, but I have to take it with every bit of food I eat so I'm not eating much. It's hard not to just have a handful of grapes to satisfy a sweet craving, so more often than not I just don't eat until it's time for a meal.
I take the Singulair and Zyrtec for asthma and allergies. They work fairly well. I also had allergy shots for 4 years, which also helped.
The Nexium is for GERD/acid reflux. This has improved since I started taking the Lipram.
I take Toprol because I have mitral valve prolapse and would get palpitations. I'm happy with it too.
The met is fine now that I'm used to it. The first three months were full of nausea, food aversion, upset stomachs etc. Luckily I never had the runs that many cysters describe, but it wasn't much fun. I did lose about 30 pounds (need to lose about 25 more at least) so it was worth it.
I don't really notice a difference with the Cymbalta, but that's probably a good thing because I'd probably be a real witch without it! I know it helps me but isn't really obvious.
I answered 7+ b/c i take 10 pills a day total...and do have a hefy pill sorter...but then i though...oh wait, maybe i answered wrong, b/c i didn't know if supplements counted?? I only have one "prescription" which is my met but i take an army's supply of supplements.
In the AM:
1 prenatal vit.
1 b-complex
metformin (1 pill)
2 calcium pills
In the PM:
metformin (2 pills)
2 omega 3 fish oil pills
1 50mg zinc supplement
