I went to see my general Dr. today and told him I was recently diagnosed with PCOS. He asked if I was on Met, I said no. Then I asked how do I find out if I am IR, he said well most over weight people are and wrote me a Rx for glucophage 500mg/day. No tests or anything is that normal?!?!?! Then after reading all of the side affects I see posted on here I'm scared to take it!! What do I do? I have no insurance and cannot afford to see different Dr.'s everytime I need and answer one hasn't given me, he pretty much had the attitude like I'm sure you are IR if you want to take it here is the script. I want to take it if I need it not for the hell of it! And he did all of this in the hallway as he was going over my cholesteral test results he had to run and get off the printer. He is a very nice man and I trust him but he is so non concerned about everything. I know he knows the ins and outs (or at least I hope he does) but I don't! When will it start working, how will I know if it's working? How do I know if the dosage needs to be increased? UGHHHHHHH HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well Most people have to beg their docs for met. Congrats to you. My Endo told me Met helps people in general with PCOS. Not just with IR. She does put her patients on it just to regulate AF and to increase fert. I am IR but not over weight. Well I was a little when i Started Met but i lost the weight. I say try it or you can save up the money for the tests you want run. I find the side effects (only lasted about 3 months) were not bad in comparison to how i felt before i started met.
Good luck!

WOW I didn't know it was hard to get on. So it isn't going to hurt me to take it if I'm not IR? I took my first dose last night and I feel fine so far this morning. How long before the Met starts doing what it's supposed to do? Constance, how much met are you on, just curious. How will I know if 500mg/day is the right amount for me? What about this lactic acidosis I have read about..is that a real concern?

hey there...not to worry they did the same to me...it was my first appointment and my Dr gave me met. I really haven't had too many problems with it..my side effects are very slim to none although they were a little worse in the beginning but definately managable! Everyone is different and I hope you are like me with very little to deal with. Just make sure you take it with lots of food...I find that drinking milk with it helps me. Good luck!!
I am on 1500mg a day. Any time you take a medication (including asprin) you should take all of the side effects as real concern. If you feel the sypmtoms of LA then call your doctor.
You should have a liver funtion test done at after about 3 to 6 months after to being on the met.
And yes take it with food. Certain foods will cause you to have gas or bloat when you eat them while on met. Just keep a food diary so you can keep track of what ones upset your stomach.
I find, cheese, bananas, and some leafy greens cause my stomach to turn over.
I did not really start having side effects until i started at 1000mg a day.
Your doctor is being very responsible by starting you on a low dose and doing the wait and see.
Can I ask What are your symtoms?

Hi constance,Do you mean symptoms as relates to taking met? None so far I just started last night. But my PCOS symptoms are ~AF only comes about 2 times a yr since 2001 ~a few skin tags ~facial hair ~loosing hair on my head, luckily it was very thick to begin with and I don't mind that one so much ~ overweight, 265 now, was always chubby but not obese. Since AF has been seen less and less over the past few yrs my weight has gone up and up! ~Anxiety, don't know if that's related or not ~ tired in the afternoon, especially after I eat...don't know what that means ~ wow since being on provera (started last month) to induce AF I have had serious pimples!!! ~ and I'm not sure what else I have that may be pcos related. I never thought skin tags and facial hair was anything more than the cards I was dealt. Does it sound like I'm insulin resistant to you? BTW you guys are great and I am SOOOOOOOOOOO glad I have all of you to talk to! It serioulsy brings tears to my eyes how great all of you are. I have no one else to talk to about this, no one, not even Dh, seems to want to listen.

"tired in the afternoon, especially after I eat...don't know what that means"
Alarm! You should really see a dietician. This is a sign of IR or high blood sugar.
Did your doctor test you for IR? Diabetes? I am not trying to scare you but this is a sign that your blood sugar is spiking.
One of the absolute best therapies i have done is to get moving. I know it is so hard especially after a long day of work and kids and dinner. but if you can get some kind of work out that you enjoy and do it for at least 15 minutes a day. You can work your way up to more minutes but i set my goal low. I mow the yard with the push mower or pull weeds or chase the kid. It should help with the general feeling of blahness. You can PM me or email me if you want. Dont worry though it sounds like you have a doctor who knows what is going on. Met should help regulate AF and little with the acne. I use proactive or Acne free from Walmart. It really does work.

My doc tests me to see if the Met. is affecting my blood sugar/insulin levels or my liver. I take gereral women's vitamins with the Met. as some other cysters do. All my side effects have worn off except for the reduced appetite. I think you should get tested for IR/Diabetes, but that's just my opinion. I'm on 1500/day.
My Dr. hasn't done anything to check to see if I am IR. He just said that because I am overweight I probably am and wrote me the Rx. How will I know if the me is working? How long after beginning it will it begin to work? I don't know if this is in my head or not, but today I seemed to have more energy. Could it be the met or am I just having a good day??

HI, I am new here but my blood tests were all normal, I was not IR according to them and I took the met trying to get pregnant this past time and it worked the first month I took it (after trying 10 months and 4 months on Clomid). I stayed on it for the first 3 months of pg and ALL of my symptoms were gone within a couple of months. According to my friend who is a pharmacist, Metformin helps your body use the insulin better, it does not just lower your blood sugar or your insulin level. SO she says that even though I am not IR, it won't hurt to take it. Also, my ob said the same thing when I was trying to get pg. He said that Metformin helps women ovulate who are not IR and even some who have not been diagnosed with PCOS. I hope that helps some!
By the way, I did have a little bit of stomach upset for the first week I was on it, but after that I was absolutely fine with no side effects!
