Default Sometimes I REALLY wonder....

Alright, well...I ws diagnosed with PCOS in March 2005...However, sometimes I really think the doctor is wrong....Well, my blood tests report normal testosterone levels, but a tiny elevation in free testosterone. Which then contributes to a decrease in the sex chromosome. (or vice versa...Those two go hand in hand??) Being that I'm overweight, I have mild insulin resistance....The reason why I question his diagnosis is because I read in books that just being overweight, simply overweight (no PCOS gene or whatever) can cause you to be at some extent, even a little, insulin resistant. And, being IR can cause an increase in free testosterone, which then causes an automatic decrease in the sex chromosome. So, am I just simply overweight here?? I don't neccesarily feel like I have PCOS. My mother had endometriosis, and I feel I may have it. (THAT instead...) Does endo cause slight irregularities in periods (missing them)? I do have some cramping too during the month...I mean, I do have the tiniest amount of facial hair...like 2 hairs or so that hardly bother me. Maybe it's my German heritage or something. I know it seems like I'm throwing excuses out, but this just doesn't run in my family at all...But I know endo does. Actually, I'd rather have PCOS than endo personally. It seems more mangable to me....

Anyway, anybody else hear of these little theories I wrote about????

I have another dr appt. in May....

Hey there, the only way I knew I had PCOS is through the lap and the surgeon busted over 25 cysts on my ovaries. Not too knowledgeable about the IR stuff. I had tests done, but I can tell you, that when I eat less sugar and flour, and exercise and drink water, I get my periods, and I lose weight.

Yes, endometriosis can cause spotting, dark/ infrequent mostly before and during your menstrual cycles along w/pain you're talking about. But the only way a physician or an endo can really diagnose endometriosis is via laparoscopy. Hope this helped some, Im sure another cyster can come along with some more support/ideas for ya

Take care and good luck!

The cause of PCOS is widely varied throughout the medical community. However, one of the leading theories has to do with insulin resistance. Insulin resistance causes your other hormones to be out of whack (ie. increased testosterone) causing hirsutism, acne, irregular periods, etc. Some think that it's insulin resistance that can cause you to have trouble losing weight, not being overweight causing insulin resistance (I don't know what's true). There are many people that are overweight and don't have any of these problems, so no, I don't think you are just overweight.

I don't know what you mean by decrease in "sex chromosome." Humans are born with 46 chromosomes (excluding such things as Downs Syndrome) and remain the same all their lives.
