Unhappy Sooo Tired on Metformin

I just started Metformin (500mg 2x daily) about two days ago. Yesterday and today I have been SO unbelievably tired. Usually after work I am so ready to walk or go to curves. Now I have to force myself. Yesterday at curves I was definitely more worn out that I had ever been. I even quit two machines ahead which isnt like me at all. (not to mention I have major gas!)

Did this happen to any of you? Did it last? If so, how friggin long?

I have to admit I have been lucky with the side effects. The only time I have problems is if I eat high fat foods. You have the option of doing 500 mg once a day for a week and then build up to twice a day.

I also noticed that the front part of my brain (forehead) feels funny, fuzzy or lightheaded, sometimes a mild headache. Not sure if it is the met or just allergies. Any one else notice this?

They say normally in two weeks your side effects go away. Good luck, I am glad you finally got the met, I have been thrilled with my results.

How long were you tired tickled pink? I also have very vivid dreams now. But I am very lucky that I have no G-I problems. But this sleepy thing sucks...it makes me feel guilty for not giving my best in work outs and I am very snappy with my students. Is there anything I can take or eat to help with the sleepiness/fuzziness?

I was also very very tired. I started met and bromocriptine all at the same time and was never sure what caused it. I did however sleep for two days straight the weekend I started it. I hope you shake it soon. The sleepiness has been gradually tapering off day by day. I hardly notice it now.

I was exhausted for the first month I upped the dose to 2000 mg. I came home and could do nothing. I even woke up feeling tired. At 1500 mg, I was ok, but AF was not coming either.

I then read on the board about Met and B12 problems. Look at this from this site: "Metformin may interfere with calcium metabolism [35]. This may indirectly reduce vitamin B12 absorption because vitamin B12 absorption requires calcium [35]. Surveys suggest that from 10% to 30% of patients taking Metformin have evidence of reduced vitamin B12 absorption [35]."

This site actually recommends a calcium supplement to help the body absorb B12.

Anyway, I started taking a B complex vitamin and a daily multi-vitamin about 2 weeks ago. This week was the first time I started feeling better. And today, I actually felt alive!! After looking at this last site, I may also add a calcium supplement back into my morning ritual. I am hoping now that Met will do its job and give me back my energy that PCOS stole!

HTH,
amanda

It is 11:58, 20 minutes before lunch. I am at that time of day when I feel dizzy and very sleepy. Like things are swirling around me...Im not quite sure why but I am sure it will continue for the rest of the day. From 6am-noon I feel okay, then BAM!

I felt wiped out for a few weeks and was only able to go to work and go home and take a bath and go to bed. I would sleep away the weekends. It got worse for me before it got better. I did add iron (I'm anemic) and B12.

I started on 500mg for a week and then went up to 1000 mg for the last 5 weeks and just went back down to 500mg a few days ago. The tiredness got better a week ago but the GI stuff is too much for me. I have had a lot of nasea and vomiting along with gas and the runs. My GI symptoms didn't start until several days after starting the med. I thought I wasn't going to have any side effects and then I got slammed.

It usually gets better for most people. I suggest sleeping as much as you need and not pushing yourself too hard. I found if I let myself sleep, I felt a lot better then making myself do things. And some days, I just couldn't get up. If there had been a house fire, I would have been a goner!!

Is all of this just getting acclimated to the drug? Please tell me you don't feel this way all the time. I just got a prescription yesterday and plan to start taking it tomorrow. Does this all go away with time?

Kasi--I feel like that for about 6 hours during the day ...from 11ish-5ish I feel totally sleepy. I feel awake and good from 6-11 and 5-9. But I am in the same boat with you. I just started also, this is my 3rd day. Maybe we can help each other out.
