Default South beach diet for a thin cyster?

I’m a thin cyster (5’7’’ and about 125 pounds). I’ve always been thin, have always had a very high metabolism and pretty much can eat whatever I want and not gain weight. I’ve also had extremely long cycles since I first got my period, and was diagnosed with PCOS about a year ago, at the age of 26. The Dr. put me on Metformin (1500 mg a day) and it has helped make my cycles shorter (between 30 and 42 days, give or take, as opposed to the 50, 60 or even 80 days that they used to be). So I guess I am insulin resistant even though I’m not overweight, since the Metformin is helping my cycles. I don’t really understand why I’m not overweight, though.

Anyway, the Dr. recently recommended the South Beach diet to be b/c she said it can further help my insulin levels and help my cycles become more normal. The thing is, I don’t want or need to lose weight. I don’t know a whole lot about South Beach, but I read that it can make you lose 8-13 pounds in a couple weeks, which would make me underweight. Anyone know anything about South Beach? Have any other thin cysters done South Beach or other low carb diets? Has it helped make your cycles more normal? Thanks!

Hi Sdecorla,

I started the south beach diet a week and a half ago. I was 118lbs when I started and I am now 108! I wasn't overweight at all, but I did have extra weight in my stomach area that is common in people with IR so I guess that was extra weight I didn't need.

I don't think you should worry about losing too much weight. The south beach diet allows you to eat as much as you want, you basically can't eat foods that will spike your insulin (pasta, rice, bread, sweets) so it's basically just eating healthy. It was created for diabetics, not for weight loss, so you will only lose that which you don't need.

I love it and can't imagine ever going back to the way I used to eat.

I haven't done South Beach, but my mom has, and from what I've heard from her is that there are different stages to the diet. Like Stage One is the strictest one, then Stage 2 you introduce more foods back into the diet and Stage 3, which is the maintenance stage (or something like that).

I've heard that it's a good diet for IR, but you would want to skip the earlier phases and go straight to the maintenance one. Also, you could always just eat more food. Like if it calls for eating 1 thing, eat 2, or something like that. So that way you are eating good foods for the GI index, but making sure you are eating enough of them to not lose any weight. Just modify it as you need to.

I've never really done a low carb diet for real. I did 'Atkins' for about 2 days in college with my roommates, and that's about it! I just try and eat in moderation the bad things, and just concentrate on healthy grains and veggies and good proteins and stuff.
