Default speaking in tongues

Oh gosh, i love talking about religion.

Recently, I went to this Bible study where the guy "layed hands" on people in the group. and I had them to do this me (I was really not taking it seriously) and some of them were muttering these things that sounded like they were talking in tongues. The leader of the group said he is a charistmatic christian and I read up on it and that means they do things including talk in tongues.

what is this? can't you just say random stuff and be talking in tongues? i don't get it.

bleuh fuoiu loof a mueg por toirew

there? did I do an internet version of talking in tongues?

I'm not trying to belittle people who believe in this I just really want to know more about it because it seems so strange to me.

Yes it does look strange, mainly because it is so rarely implemented in most churches,But it is biblically based. It is considered one of the gifts of the holy spirit. Its not gobbily gook, its actually a spiritual language. When you become a Christian it is believed that you recieve a gift from the holy spirit.Speaking in Tongues is one of those. There is a whole bible passage talking about this.Acts 2:4 (King James Version)
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

I personally speak in tongues. I use it when I don't know what to pray about or when the Holy Ghost kind of takes over me. I can't really descibe it other that a warm feeling that comes over me.

me2,

you can be at church, in your home, or anywhere for that fact. The Holy Spirit is ALWAYS with us everywhere we are.

There is a great book by John Bevere. The name of it is "Drawing Near to God." It goes in depth about the baptism of the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues. I was raised in a church that believes in the baptism of the Holy Spirit. So, it wasn't something that was new to me. However, at the church I go to now. We have been doing a Bible study with that John Bevere series. It has really taken me to a deeper place and explained alot of things about speaking in tongues. I will give you scripture if you would like. I am about to leave and don't have time to drag out the books right now, but I will be be glad to try and help you better understand what the Bible says about speaking in tongues. Here is another link to scripture about spiritual gifts right off the top of my head and the link to JB's web site. If you buy the book, look for it on Ebay. It is cheaper there.

When we speak in tongues, it is said to be that Satan cannot understand it, therefore, no weapon formed against you shall prosper, and persoanlly I like that 'notion' Satan comes to kill, steal, and destroy, and if he don't know what I'm saying to God, then he can't do nothing!! AMEN

I wanted to do some serious research on this one.

1 Corinthians 14 (New International Version)
New International Version (NIV)
Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984 by International Bible Society

1 Corinthians 14
Gifts of Prophecy and Tongues
1Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. 2For anyone who speaks in a tongue[a] does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.[b] 3But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. 4He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,[c] but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues,[d] unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.
6Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? 7Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? 8Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? 9So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me. 12So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.

13For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says. 14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. 16If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand[e] say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? 17You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.

18I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults. 21In the Law it is written: “Through men of strange tongues
and through the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people,
but even then they will not listen to me,”[f] says the Lord.

22Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. 23So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand[g] or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand[h]comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all, 25and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”

Orderly Worship
26What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. 27If anyone speaks in a tongue, two–or at the most three–should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.
29Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. 30And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.

As in all the congregations of the saints, 34women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. 35If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

36Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 37If anybody thinks he is a prophet or spiritually gifted, let him acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord's command. 38If he ignores this, he himself will be ignored.[i]

39Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.

As far as laying on of hands:

Hebrews 6
1Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death,[a] and of faith in God, 2instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3And God permitting, we will do so.

4It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, 6if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because[b]to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.

7Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. 8But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.

9Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are confident of better things in your case–things that accompany salvation. 10God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. 11We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure. 12We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.

I would be happy to do more research for you if you are seriously interested. Or you could type in the phrases you are interested into "biblegateway.com" or even www.blueletterbible.org

Good luck with your research and may God bless you with your findings.

forgive my dumb question, but if you do not speak in tongues, does that mean you are not saved?

Juana baby,

I always heard the same thing that you posted.. that if you are speaking in tongues you should be able to interpret what you're saying, or it's not coming form God. If you can't interpret it, then it's not from God.

You can be saved and never speak in tongues.

There are tow different ways to speak in tongues. One is where there is someone to interpretate and the other is a private prayer langague. I only have the gift of the prayer tongues.

((Laura)) the only 'dumb' question is the question never asked lol

Personally, I will occassionally pray in tongues as a private prayer language, that's why I said Satan cannot understand me, it's ALL between me and God. Speaking in tongues is a personaly choice, there are people at my church who talk in tongues every Sunday, while others don't. It all boils down to the heart and the spirit/Spirit...literally. Of course you can be saved and not talk in tongues, He is just waiting...

Just my opinion....

Hi all, here are some of my thoughts!
1. I love praying in tongues. It's a state where I "let go, let God" and He speaks through me. For me, it tends to be just a couple syllables over and over. Other people have complete languages.
2. There have been documented instances of people just spurting out the Our Father in Latin or some other language they do not know. I had a woman lay her hands on me and pray over me (which is AWESOME!) and she kept saying chiesa (pronounced kee-ay-sa) in her tongue which is Italian for church.
3. Not everyone talks in tongues, that doesn't reflect anything on their salvation. God gives different gifts to different people. If you are open to receiving the gift of tongues, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to come upon you.
4. Not everyone can interpret tongues (see #2) A lot of times, one person will have the gift of interpreting someone else's tongue.
5. This is only a pleasant experience if you are open to it. Everyone has a comfortable spirituality and for some it is this kind of charismatic worship, some people prefer to be contemplitive. Isn't God amazing that He's STILL THE GOD to each and every one?

Blessings, Kara

I'm sorry if this has already been said. I didn't have time to read through everything.

I've always thought of the gift of tongues as a gift of the Holy Ghost that allows inspired individuals to speak in, understand, or interpret unfamiliar languages. Some people can do it, and others can't. It is a gift of the spirit. Another gift is to interpret tongues. Other gifts include faith and healing.
