Default special diet before glucose tolerance test?

My doctor order a bunch of tests, one of them a glucose tolerance test. When I go to the lab for my tests I will have been fasting from the night before...but I was wondering if there is any special diet I should have before my GTT. I thought I had read a thread a while back saying a certain amount of carbohydrates must be consumed X amount of days before??

Christina,

I have read on this website and on another website somewhere (can't remember where) that it is best to not restrict carbohydrates for 3 days before the GTT. I think this is because restricting carbohydrates may change your body's response to glucose / insulin - so the initial diagnosis may not be as clear. (I don't really know, I am just speculating).

Having said that, when I did the test, the specialist didn't tell me to do anything different with my diet. I was low-carbing at the time (I'm not anymore, I use a low GI and low GL diet that has moderate carbohydrate and is supposed to be healthier in the long term), but my test still showed that I was insulin resistant. So maybe the diet doesn't matter that much.

I think it may be best to call the doctor who ordered the test and ask him/her.

Hope this helps,
Michelle

I didn't get any special diet info when I tried to take my GTT. Did they discuss and A1C as a suitable test?

GTT's made me throw up -- the Glucola tasted gross to me -- so they could never get a good result for me. When I complained they let me take one with granala bars, and that was better tasting, but still no good so finally I got to take an A1C -- way easier since it's a single blood draw and not several.

HTH!

Dont make any changes to your diet. If you are taking the GTT all they want to know is how well you body reacts to excess amounts of suger. The only thing that you need to do is fast and then go and take the test. If you change you diet you should still get the same results, but there is no reason to change anything.

Thanx girls! I am taking my GTT tomorrow. I usually run on the treadmill everyday, but I am not sure if that will effect the test?? Since I am not sure, I am going to wait till the test is over to exercise. Has anyone heard anything about exercise and the GTT?
