my husband needs to get one done. so we have to find a dr and then we go and then....what? what can he expect? i don't want him to be scared but i know he is!!  [b]

Hi Cynthia! DH and I have been through this so many times....
Basically you will go to your docs office and you and dh will go into a little room and he will ejaculate into a cup via masterbation (no lubricant. saliva, sex). I will admit that it's a little embarassing.
OR....If your not so comfortable with that, your doc can give the two of you a special condom to submit the sample. You can performe this at home, but I really recomend doing the sample in the dr's office.
Maybe for your first time you can plan it at home and see how the analysis comes back. If everything is fine, then you don't have to worry. If they do find something, the perform the next sample at your drs office. Another thing I would recommend is a sperm penetration assay. This test will determine if dh's sperm can actually penetrate the egg.

If you live close to the dr. you can do it at home. My husband did his in the bathroom at the clinic! I can't use that bathroom now without giggling.  Tell him not to worry. Just relax and uh let go I guess LOL

When we had to do this, my gyno gave us a "prescription"/paperwork to take to the hospital. My husband had to ejaculate via masterbation into a cup and we took the cup up to the hospital. So, he was able to do it from home. As long as you get it to the lab within 35 minutes and can keep it at body temperature (I kept my hands around it) it was fine.

Our dr gave us a cup/canister and some paperwork to take to the lab.
DH will be doing it at home next week and running it over to the lab. We also have to keep the sample warm.

My DH just had his done about a month ago, and the doc gave him a cup and paperwork to take to the lab. I think as long as you can get there in an hour you can do it at home.

Is this something us as wives can "assist" with if it has to be done at the clinic or whatever? We learned today that down the road my hubby might need to have this done and he's not comfortable doing it alone. We live 1 1/2 hours from our hospital, so that's why I'm wondering. I have to admit, I am really nervous about this part....

As far as I know, he has to do it on his own. I wouldn't be nervous about it. It's not like it's painful or anything. Especially since us women go through all of the painful tests, and all the guys have to do is cum in a cup! They won't be giving him a time limit or anything.

Manders | I have heard that you can 'assist' your husband ... at least that was what I was told from friends here in town who have gone thru that. I completely understand. My hubby is not comfortable with it alone either. I plan on asking my Dr in November (when we have to have this done) if I can go in the room with him ... Shoot .. I am uncomfortable with it myself. lol

M y DH prefers to go into the room alone as he says he is nervous as it is and if im in there helping him or watching him watch dirty movies(which our RES office supplied) it makes him more nervous and he thinks it may interfer wtih the sperm count.I think it is just a couples preference what u want to do.
