Default Sperm count higher on 2nd IUI?

First SA, abstained 72 hours, 100 mill (don't know the motility)
First IUI, abstained 48 hours, 80 million with 60% motility
Second IUI, abstained 24 hours, 90 million with 90% motility

Can a guy really have greater sperm count on day 2? Suddenly I got freakishly paranoid that they weren't DH's sperm or something!!!

From what my Dr told me, the amount of abstaining CAN increase numbers by some.....which is good!

In my case, for the SA, we abstained for 4 days, and still only got 5 mil/ml......

I guess what I'm worried about is that he abstained less but had more... is that weird?

hmmmm......well, there are also studies that suggest that when they abstain too long, the sperm dissolve and then they make new. I think it's a rule of thumb that they make new sperm every 24 hours.....

So, maybe that's it???

This is all very interesting! And something I'm just kind of learning about. We are doing an IUI on Friday (8/7) and my RE suggested that my husband "release" last night and then abstain until Friday morning when he provides his sample. She said that anything left hanging around longer than that would most likely be dead. Has anyone's doctor ever told them that? And on previous cycles when we HAVEN'T done an IUI she has us DTD on the night of the trigger shot just to get rid of dead sperm. The "conception BD'ing" is usually 24-36 hours later. (Like ours would have been Friday morning anyway.)

interesting comments... lol, I'm still paranoid that somehow that wasn't my husband's sperm or something

Maybe 80 vs 90 mill is just within counting error... it just seems weird that his count would be higher after 24 hours of abstaining versus 48 hours of abstaining

my RE insists there is no reason to abstain longer than 24 hours
the longer you abstain the more damage you could do to the sperm

Don't worry about his sperm count being higher. I just had two back to back IUIs this past Sunday/Monday and sperm count doubled on the second day. The RE said this is not common, but not crazy rare either. I don't know about your DH, but mine was not exactly thrilled to be providing a sample at 8 am on Sunday morning and he was a bit nervous, so I think after the first, maybe he was just more relaxed. I took it as a good thing and went home and bd for good measure! Baby dust to you!

Phew, sfrancis, you totally put my mind at ease! So long as there's at least someone else out there that had the same thing happen, then I don't have to worry about it, lol

I guess as much as they don't know enough about the female reproductive system, they seem to know even less about the mysteries of male sperm production!

You are not paranoid, I had the same thought cross my mind briefly. After all the things we go through to even get to the point of having an IUI, you consider every last thing, but I am sure it was your DH's sperm! 8^)

My DH's count is ALWAYS higher the 2nd day of back to back IUIs, so we've started throwing in an extra BD the night of the first IUI, so we do.....IUI, BD that night, then IUI the next morning, and his count is still higher at the second IUI.

My nurse also said it's unusual but it happens.....

And, I too get really paranoid that there will be a sperm mixup and that I'll get someone else's sperm....but they claim that it's pretty fool proof
