Hey guys,
Just wondering if any of you knew about the link between spiro and cancer
From wikipedia: Carcinogenicity
Studies of spironolactone and the related compound potassium canrenoate (which, like spironolactone, metabolizes to canrenone) in rats for one to two year periods show an increase in carcinogenesis in the thyroid gland, testes, liver, breasts, and myelocytic leukocytes. Mammalian cells, depending on the presence of metabolic activation, show mixed results for mutagenicity in vitro.[6] In light of this research, Sandoz has recommended that unnecessary use of spironolactone be avoided.
Since we have had a number of new cancer cases in our family in the last two years, i am really scared to try ANYTHING that can up the percentage.
Please advise.
Sincerely
Cindy
I went to the study Wiki mentioned and it said there is no evidence it causes tumors in humans. The theory is that since it can cause tumors in rats it might be able to cause those in humans. FWIW, I'm starting Spiro tomorrow.
Unless there is evidence that it causes tumors in us humans, I personally am not concerned. This may sound terrible to some, but I would take that risk in order to decrease my excess hair. I am soooo disturbed by my hair, its all I think about sometimes. So would I rather live happy and take a chance or be miserable? I pick happy!

I'd never been able to find references to the actual study that says what dosage was used on what type of animal and for how long until now. Wiki links to it in reference 6. I worry about breast cancer since it runs in my family. The study says people on Spiro have been diagnosed with breast cancer, but no cause and effect relationship have been found. I'm guessing people on just about every type of medicine known to man have been diagnosed with breast cancer. In the study, they gave the rats human-sized doses, and it caused several types of tumors that were benign, as well as some cancerous tumors. It may increase estrogen in your body and some tumors are estrogen fueled, so it could possibly cause breast cancer, but so could BCP and Soy which also contain estrogen and may increase it in your body.
