I've just started taking spironolactone for my PCOS. Man o man, I just wanna crawl into bed and sleep for the next week or so. Did you have this side effect? How long before it went away? Also, not happy with the headache, but will deal with these side effects in the short run if the long-term payoff is worth it!
My doc has started me on 50mg for a week, then 100 mg for a week, then 200 mg after that.
Well, hmmm...I was drowsy while taking spiro, but I never thought it a side effect. However, I'm taking met now and still on spiro, and my energy is through the roof. I guess it was more IR than anything.
I'm sorry I'm not more help! I know what you're going through, though.
I am always really tired in the afternoon, and working out has become a PROJECT! I am on 200mg of Spiro, but not Met ... I am not IR. I have been on it for a month or so ...
That was one of my biggest peeves with Spiro. I could barely stay awake in the evenings. More often than not I was asleep on the couch by 6 PM. And I was only on 100 mg.
My other peeve was how sore my breasts always were. It also messed with my periods if I wasn't taking BCP's.
I've heard that if you have this particular side effect, that it doesn't tend to resolve itself. Have any of you heard that? I have a call in to my doc to see what she thinks, but if there is another med I can take without this drowsiness, I'll take it.
BTW, it doesn't matter what time I take it. I took yesterday's dose in the morning, was fine by the evening, but then again this morning could NOT get up.
(I could have stayed under the covers and cried, tho! YAY, Yasmin and Spiro!!)

I forgot to ask, it sounds like you're not on it anymore. Is that why? How long did you take it?

I took spiro mainly to help with the facial hair and hair loss. I was told that I would begin seeing results after three months and full results after six months. I took it for well over a year - close to 1 1/2 years eventually reaching 200 mg.
It did nothing for me in the way of facial hair or hair loss. I did my own research and found out that although spiro is effective for excess hair (well, not in my case), it won't help with hair loss. So I stopped taking it.
For me, the only change I noticed while taking spiro (besides the wonderful side effects) was the disappearance of little black hairs that had just started to grow on my chest near my breasts. However, I stopped taking spiro over a year ago and those hairs haven't returned.
I had the fatigue at 75mg, but not at 50. I could never figure out if it was the Spiro itself or having to tinkle so early in the morning (I don't fall back asleep easily).

Yeah, I've been thinking that I can deal with the excess hair. And, it may have just been my imagination, but I've read that Spiro can actually make scalp hair loss worse, and that certainly seemed to be my reaction.
So, all in all, I don't think it's worth it for me. I do need to do something about my outrrrrrrrrrrageous testosterone levels, though. Am I right that weight loss alone can be just as effective in balancing your levels as using an anti-androgen?

Weight loss can help lower the androgen levels, but there are many cysters who deal with the hair loss/excess hair who are thin, so there are other issues at work. Sometimes the medication is necessary.
For me, the fatigue from being on the spiro did lessen to some degree after awhile, but it never fully went away. I still had to fight to stay awake in the evenings.
