I've been taking Spiro 100mg ( ithink) for 2 months. I notice I am really losing my hair! Just like I did post-baby. I also started the no-poo around the same time. I figured that wouldn't cause hair loss.
Has anyone had hair loss from Spiro? Should I stop taking it. It is the only medication I am on. I don't take any vitatmins either.
Really? Isnt it the other way around?? Spiro stopped my hair loss.
I think it might have been the no-poo cleansing conditioner that's supposed to be sooo good for your hair! I stopped using it about a week ago and don't notice my hair falling out anymore.
It just baffles me because I am a hairdresser and I've never heard of a shampoo or conditioner that would make your hair fall out! Although, while researching here yesterday, someone mentioned that some people build up DHt (or something) on there scalp and if you don't wash it enough, it could cause hair loss. So maybe that's what was happening???
everyone says spiro CAN'T make your hair fall out but I have NEVER experienced hair loss until taking either spiro or met (i'm leaning towards spiro now...) My Dr (and a few websites) have recently said a side effect of spiro is actually hair loss... go figure! I am going to stop it this week and see what happens...
Do you have any updates???

I've heard that spiro can initially cause hairloss, but over time these side effects are reversed. Of course everyone reacts differently, but I would maybe stick with it and see what happens. I've been on Spiro for about a year now, and I was shedding like mad a couple months ago. Now my hair is thicker than it has been in years. Go figure
I know that anti androgens can cause an initial shed, but I also have heard that the hair loss can be an actual side effect of the med. Another interesting thing I heard about finasteride (i don't know about spiro) was that it can cause a hyperandrogenic reaction in some people. I'm wondering if spiro can also do that. I know both work wonders for some A WHOLE LOT of people (I wish I was one) but ever since getting on met + spiro, not only has my once beautiful hair started falling out, but my body hair has gotten out of control!!! I wish I was so lucky as to have found a solution. *sigh* Hey, if it works for you, stick with it!

I had a big shed after a few months of starting spiro. It lasted a few weeks, then stopped. I had all these new little hairs popping up all over my head after that.
how big of a shed? i guess my problem is not only this huge shed, but the fact that my hair loss started AFTER I started meds.... and my body hair increased DRAMATICALLY after meds also.... you couldn't imagine! I posted hair loss pics on heralopecia... I am going to post them here today to show you what happened in 4 months... be on the look out

I would guess that I was losing about 300 per day. I counted one time what was in the tub after my shower, and that particular time it was 275.
Did you happen to start met around the same time as the spiro? Hairloss is also a side effect of met, due to the depletion of vitamins. I've experinced some major shedding when doing a low-carb diet for extended periods. In my case, it always seems to bounce back after my body has some time to adjust to the changes.
Of course, if it keeps falling out, and the body hair continues to worsen, be sure to speak to your physician. There are so many things that can cause this.
Could be the "dread shed". Seems to happen with a lot of meds that reset hair growth, I've heard this from people who took spiro, flutamide and rogaine. I personally had a bad "dread shed" about 2 months into using rogaine, it lasted a month. It seems to pass after 1-2 months for most people.

has anyone heard of a dread shed accompanied by worsening body hair? If it wasn't accompanied by that, and the fact that I never had hair loss, I might be inclined to believe it was a dread shed... but because of this, I am pretty scared...
I'm glad to hear your shed was as big as mine and you actually recovered. It gives me hope.

I realize this is a bit of an older thread but I found an interesting quote that could explain "dread shed" after starting Spiro.
Quote:
What should I expect to see with spironolactone (Aldactone) treatment? Many women affected by FPHL experience an increase in hair shedding or a reduction in hair volume, or both. You may start to notice a reduction in hair shedding within 4 months of commencing treatment with spironolactone.
It is important to note that the hairs you shed now actually died 3 months ago and had been sitting dormant in the follicle until new hairs grow to replace them. As such, there would be a delay of about 3 months before the effects of spironolactone are seen after commencing treatment.
By about 8 months, there may be a reduction in the amount of body hair. By about 12 months, some women may experience a slight increase in their hair density on the scalp. It is important to manage expectations with spironolactone treatment as the main aim is to slow or stop the progression of hair loss rather than expecting hair regrowth. Any regrowth is considered a bonus.
