Hey all,
I stopped taking Metformin after about 3 1/2 years after losing about 35 pounds. My dr. said that was fine. Now he wants me to take spironolactone and I also take yasmin. Are these a good combination together? My sister says that they interact and create a bad reaction (potassium). Any ideas? I'd appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks!
Sharon
Hey all,
Ithey interact and create a bad reaction (potassium). Sharon
Hi Sharona, I've been taking aldactone for years and have never had any reactions, but when I started Metformin last year, it made me sick. Anyway, I think you should call your pharmacist. They know what interacts better than anyone else, even doctors. Hope they can help you know what to watch for! Fuzzy Bear
i have been on metformin and spiro for about three months now. i was reading all the posts and noticed that alot of you are only on 25 or 50 mgs. this has me worried that my case is extreme because i am on 200 mgs of spiro and 2000 mgs of metformin. have any of you out there ever been on this high a dose? the only side effect i have experienced thus far is extreme nausea and i find its hard to swallow pills and food now. any feedback would be so helpful
There was a while when I was on spiro, met and yasmin at the same time. I had no problems. However, they would check my potassium levels a little more often. But the thing to remember is that everyone reacts differently but I don't see why you can't try it. If you feel weird or anything call the doctor and talk about it.

The progestin in Yasimine is derived from Sprio, but it is only equivalent to 25mg of Spiro. That is a very low dose. Spiro is a potassium sparing diurectic, so if you eat alot of foods high in potassium, you could potentially have a problem. Many people take as much as 200mg of Spiro without any problems at all.
Spiro and Yasmin are fine. I was on this combo for a while. Your sister probably read the caption for a Yasmin ad which said to keep an eye on your potassium levels if you take Spiro and Yasmin. It's just a warning they have to put in the ad. Yasmin has spironolactone in it already, but only like 25mg. I took 150 mg spiro a day plus Yasmin. It all goes back to the potassium sparing qualities of the spiro. It's something you have to look out for if you have heart problems.
Spironolactone and Jasmine don't cause an "interaction", they just both contain spironolactone which is, as someone posted, a potassium sparing diuretic. As long as you get your electrolyte levels checked every so often, the combination is fine. however, if you have any kidney disease, this should be extra carefully monitored. Same if you have cardiac arrhthymias, in which having too high potassium could be harmful. The amount of food containing potassium you would have to eat to be at risk for hyperkalemia (high potassium) is extraordinary. And as we all know us PCOSers shouldn't eat lots of bananas anyway because of the sugar!! The same caveat is, of course, if you have kidney disease in which case you *should* be eating low potassium foods.
I was on metformin 2000 mg and spironolactone 200 AND jasmine and the combo never caused problems.

p.s. Though I'm not an expert, I'm a physician with PCOS so I know the basic drug-drug interactions.
just want to say that i take 200mg spiro and 2000mg metformin and i have no issues at all. i can't take BCP because i have high blood pressure so i can't give any insight on the yasmin...
