Default Spiro and Potassium

Why should one avoid potassium if they are on Spiro?

Thanks,
Suze

Spiro is a potassium sparing drug, which means it keeps potassium from leaving your body. If one has to much potassium (which is an electrolyte...like salt) it can effect the rhythm of the heart and could cause damage. So usually when on Spiro its wise to avoid high potassium foods, expecially if you are on Yasmin as well, which is also potassium sparing. Talk to your doc about it if you are worried about it. GL!

Oh, I forgot I would avoid it if you are TCCing because it can cause severe birth defects in male fetuses. Definitly talk to your doc...

Sorry, I should've added that I'm not on it. A friend of mine is... She just started.

She also takes Potassium supplements b/c she's always had a problem with potassium deficiency. And I'm sad to say heart problems too. So that's why I was alarmed to see that Spiro patients should be avoiding potassium.

This is very important info I need to get to her right away. Thanks for posting this.
