My endo put me on both proscar and spiro. Have you asked your doctor what dose you should be taking?

Hi all,

I'm not taking Spiro, but I am on Proscar. I'd like to know your experiences with it. I started 6 months ago to help with hairloss, acne and xs hair. It worked well in the hairloss department as shedding stopped from day 1. However I'm not seeing the results I want. I always had very thick curly hair and in a few years I lost nearly half of my hair. It's getting somewhat better now but still not the way it was. Any thoughts? Also, it's not helping my skin.

Post proscar in USA

How are you ladies in USA getting endos to prescribe proscar??! I have asked 7 doctors now and they all refused. It will cause damage to baby fetuses. Okay, but I'm not ttc, maybe never! I don't care if I have to pay it out of pocket! Just write me the dang px already! I want to try it badly; my hair is pathetic. Thanks.

My doc just gave the prescription for Proscar. I just started it and spiro this week so I don't have any results. I'm just praying that they don't cause my monthly period to disappear or to come more often than once a month.

Hi, can anyone tell me if you get a massive shed if you stop taking Propecia/proscar, like you do with spiro. Have you noticed any other side effects?

No, I didn't notice any side effects. My endo told me there were none.
I stopped for a week with Proscar a while ago and didn't notice shedding. I did have a breakout on my skin however.

Hey Charliegirl, thanks for the reply.
As you have been taking it for 6 months have you noticed if your hair has fattened up ie the new ones coming through aren't miniturized. I should ask was your hair growing miniturized prior to propecia?

Hi Barbie,

I'm not sure what you mean by minuterized (not a native speaker and I don't have a dictionary here, sorry). But before I started shedding I had Julia Roberts to die for long, thick and curly hair. Two years of hairloss later I cried when I looked in the mirror. I didn't have bald spots but my hair got really thin all over. My curls disappeared and became more like unhealthy sad looking waves . This is when I started Proscar. Like I said, as from day 1 the shedding stopped. 6 months later my hair looks a lot thicker and I don't have to clean out my shower drain every day. I'm not there yet, because my hair still isn't what it used to be. I think I lost half my hair and I'm now up to 2/3 of what it was once. But at least I'm not ashamed of going to the hairdresser any more (I couldn't stand their facial expression full of pity, all the well meant but in case of pcos crap advice about stress, lack of iron etc... ) I wear my hair down again instead of pinned up to cover up my thin hair. I feel sooo much better now. It's amazing what your hair can do for your looks and state of mind. A couple of weeks ago I started to take capsules of 250 mg cystine and 600 mg Methionine (the pharmacist makes these for you), this is to make my hair stronger. I hope this combined with Proscar will speed the process up a little. So far so good, I feel much more confident about my hair.
Other than that I use Joyco Volissima (American salon brand) shampoo and conditioner. Not very cheap, but very good. I also like what henna powder does for my hair. You can find it in different colors (including your own), just leave it on for a night and you'll be surprised how healthier, more shiny and thicker your hair looks. Unfortunately the effect is limited in time, but still. It can't harm anyway, because it's natural. I like the kinds of henna you can buy in small 'independent' nature stores (the one from India is usually the best), I didn't like the Henna from the Body Shop or the ones in drug stores that are already mixed with water (not so pure as the real stuff).

Thanks for the reply.
What I mean by miniturization is my hair shaft size has grown smaller, so new hairs are really thin and fine, like baby hair with no colour pigment. My hair has thinned all over but I have to say mine looks like male pattern baldness so my front section is looking really bad - upsetting.
