Default spironolactone

I have not been diagnosed with PCOS yet, but I do have excess facial hair and acne. Has anyone taken spironolactone that have helped with the hair and acne? Does taking spironolactone alone work or does it need to be taken in conjunction with other stuff?

I take Spironolactone and it has helped clear up my skin. It also helps with my excess facial hair. It doesn't get rid of hair that is already there, but it helps with new growth. I started taking Yasmin and Spiro at the same time, so I don't really know if the Spiro will help on its own. I think my dr. said that the Yasmin could be taken on its own, but the spiro works best when taken with something else. That has been a while so I don't remember exactly.

welcome to sc spiro was the first med that i had. It does help with the hair, but my endo said it takes 9-12 months to get to maximum result.

I never had severe acne but I still had problems with pimples into my adult years, especially around my period. Since starting Spiro I could count the pimples I've had on one hand! It's fantastic! It also pretty much got rid of any body odor I had... I could probably get away with not wearing deodorant but I'm not going to risk it.

As far as the hair, I haven't seen any real reduction in the hair I already had. But it seemed to stop the progress of the hirsutism and made the hair grow a bit slower. Overall I am happy with this medication. I use it along with Yasmin and this is a good combo for me. I think the doctors usually like to prescribe Spiro with a BCP because it can mess with your periods and BC helps regulate this. (I have had no problem being on these two meds, my periods are very normal as they never were before!) Also, if you get pregnant while on Spiro, it could cause harm to the baby because of its anti-androgen properties. So it may be a good idea to be on a BCP as well if you want to do that.

I was on spiro and seasonale for 4 years and it helped IMMENSELY. i was on 100mg/day and my derm told me to cut back to 50 after a few months. I did, and my acne came back within a week. This was all before I was diagnosed with PCOS. I stopped taking spiro and BC in october so we could TTC... and was diagnosed with PCOS this week. My acne is back to being annoying again.

SPIRO is awesome! I will totally get back on it after pregnancy and BF are over!
