I was very recently diagnosed with PCOS. The only associated symptom I have is scalp hair loss (well, except for the missed periods). I was prescribed this drug to prevent the hair from falling out and to enable it to grow back. My doctor didnt tell me much about the drug, so I did some research online. Is it true you truly should not drink alcohol at all while on it? What have been some of your experiences with it? In addition, my doctor never told me that I would have to have regular check-ups to get blood work done to make sure the drug was working effectively. Do you think she didnt mention it because she didnt think it necessary, or was she just being neglectful?
Well, I would consider it neglectful if she never mentioned the routine b/w. That happened to me with a terrible doctor a few years ago, and I didn't find out until I recently started taking it again. Considering that Spiro can screw with your organ functions, I'd want my doctor to tell me that!
In fact, my current GYN wanted to draw blood about 2 or 3 months after I started taking it, which I thought was early. Maybe you should ask your doctor about it? If she's not willing to test you while you're on the Spiro, I would suggest finding another doctor.
I don't know about the alcohol since I don't drink, but my mother is on another diuretic and she drinks wine just about every night.
ETA: I just thought of this - what dosage of Spiro are you taking? I used to be on 50 mg, which is why I figured my former doctor didn't bother to test me. I'm on 200 mg now.

Maybe i should have said that this woman is absolutley the best doctor ive ever been to. I am scheduled to go back in 2 months for a second gardasil shot, so that is when she probably was going to talk to me about blood work and what not. If avioding alcohol was so vital, I wish she would have told me. I am a college student and will probably be on this medication for a while, so I am trying to be realistic. When you were on it, did you aviod alcohol completley for the entire duration? I understand not to go out and binge drink every night, but having a few drinks once a week - a huge problem or not? Also, I was put on the 50mg dose. Thanks for all your help
i've been on spironolactone since 2002 now. Nobody ever mentioned the no alcohol rule to me in regards to spiro. I didn't drink a ton in college but in the past couple years, my alcohol intake has greatly increased due to a plethora of happy hours near my apt i haven't noticed any side effects though and i think i have about 12-15 drinks a week on average.
what i have been told is no alchy on metformin but ive been on that for so long too that im not too worried about it. i guess drinking with met can cause lactic acidosis that could be fatal in rare cases. its too much pressure on the liver. i just dont take my met at night though if im drinking.
I was never told no alcohol and the prescription bottle doesn't say anything about alcohol. However, when I first got put on Spiro I was only 17 and going to a pediatric endo, so he might not have thought to say anything. I'm not a big drinker, but I have been to have a couple of drinks now and then. I go to the gyn on Thursday, so I guess I'll add that to my list of questions!

When I was taking Spiro, I would have a drink occassionally and I was fine. Occassionally would be like one or two drinks a month. I would definately talk to your dr. or a pharmacist if you are concerned. In regards to the blood work, Spiro is a potassium sparing diaretic so it might raise your potassium levels. That is why your dr. would need to do blood work. After I started the Spiro, I went to my dr. and she decided not to check my blood, because I was not experiencing any symptoms of a potassium overdose. If you are worried, look up symptoms of a potassium overdose. If you experience any of those symptoms, then I would check with your dr. immediately. Otherwise, since you have an appointment scheduled soon, I would write down any questions you have and take the list with you to your appointment.

My pharmacist's label for spiro says to limit alcohol, but I avoid it completely because my doctor said to avoid it. I take 50 mg and had blood tests once a month for the first three months I was on it, then at the six months and the result of that is going to determine whether or not I keep having blood tests every six months or three months apart.
