Question Spironolactone... Archaic?

I've been on Spironolactone since I was a Jr. in high school and I am now 28 years old. I had one brief break from it during which I was taking prednisone, which turned me into a raging monster/lunatic. It made my mood swings HUGE and dramatic and mad me angry angry angry at the drop of the hat. I got back on Spironolactone and that calmed down, but I'm wondering if Spiro is starting to be an out of date med now. I'm interested in trying a newer med, in hopes that something will help decrease some of my symptoms. At this point, Spiro feels more like a habit than something that is showing any results. None of my doctors have ever suggested anything new, but I kind of feel like that's because they think, Eh, you're on something now...it's probably good enough.
Can anyone suggest a different med (i'm specifically interested in something to help ease my mood swings and possibly help me lose some weight) and maybe give me an idea of how to approach my dr. about this? She's a wonderful dr. and will do whatever she can to help me out, but I'd like to know in advance what kinds of blood tests or meds I should be expecting.

Spiro - i think it might be time we call it quits.

are you on oral contraceptives? i've been on spiro since i was a teenager (and am in my late 20s now). last fall, i switched to a new endocrinologist who expressed concern over recent studies suggesting that spironolactone might have carcinogenic effects. at the time, i was on spiro, modicon (oral contraceptive), and minocycline (an antibiotic for my skin). she took me off the spiro and the modicon and put me on yasmine (also an oral contraceptive) which has effects like spiro, and which she believed would be a good replacement for both.

however, now, several months later, i'm a few pounds heavier, have regular breakouts (not severe ones, but i seem to have one or two spots at any given time, and i scar easily so my skin looks much worse generally). i get pretty moody when i'm pms-y now, which is new too. one point of note, though, is that i haven't gotten much furrier since quitting the spiro.

i had been on yasmine before, a few years go, concurrently with the spiro. SOMETHING needs to change now, and what i'm trying to figure out is whether i need to go back to the modicon + spiro, or if going back on the modicon would be enough (i.e. if this is my body's reaction to yasmine, or its reaction to going off the spiro). my previous experience makes me think that going back on the modicon should be enough.

anyway, sorry to ramble on about myself. i just wanted to say that i'm in a similar position to yours: disinclined to continue long-term use of spiro (especially in light of the possible carcinogenicity), but unsure as to whether there's a good alternative.

if you're not on oral contraceptives, i say try that, because they have a positive effect on my symptoms. i'm going to try to switch from the yasmine back to modicon WITHOUT adding back the spiro. i'll let you know how that goes...

AFter attempting to take Spironolactone to lower testosterone, I had an allergic reation (hives). So, my doctor put me on ketoconazole - a medication usually used to treat fungal infections. It has worked good at lowering my testosterone and I haven't noticed any side affects.

BUt, I don't know if that is what you were using spiro for.
