I am starting on spiro and i need advice from experienced users i am also on ovcon 35. please send me any comments you have on spiro. and how long is it safe to stay on spiro? and what happens to your hormones after time and if you stop? thankyou
I have started spiro aprox 2 months ago. I was told that it could take at least 6 months before you noticed any changes.
I would assume that it would be safe to stay on for quite some time. The only thing that my doctor said was to watch my postssium intake becasue it could drastically increase your postassium levels. So I do not eat banannas or drink sports drinks.
What spiro does is suppose to suppress new hair growth folicles from growing. It may thin some of the existing growth that you have, however it will not completly remove it. Complete removal will have to come from laser treatments etc. while continuing to take spiro.
I don't know the end result about going off of them. On my next gyno visit I will ask.
Sorry not much help.

I've been on Spiro for about 2 years now 200mg/ day. I never had any bad side effects from it. It tremendously helped my skin. I used to have horrible acne, and now my skin is absolutely clear. I also have thinning hair, but it doesn't seem to be helping that at all my excess hair does seem to be much finer and lighter however. I hope that spiro does wonders for you!
My drs never told me to watch my potassium intake at all, so i haven't and i haven't had any problems yet. (and i love bananas )
I have been on spiro 100 mg daily for 9 months now.I have seen a difference in body hair and a mild difference in facial hair.I have just increased the dosage to 150mg a week ago.My endo said it could take up to a full year to see the maximum benefits.I do try to limit my potassium intake and have had no problems at all so far.As far as I know(I am a registered nurse)you can take it for an indefinite period of time, safely. You must stop taking it when you get pregnant. The anti-androgen effects will interfer with the sex ogan growth of a male fetus.Spiro will bock the effects of free testosterone at the hair follicule level.....resulting in slower growth, thinner weaker hair.I have noticed that in some areas, the hair has shed and not grown back at all. It's very encouraging but you must be patient. It does take time to see results and everybody is different.Spiro also has progestogen activity so it might bring your cycles closer together. In the beginning,I had my periods every 15-18 days! After the second month on metformin,my cycles have been exactly 33 days....without a fault.I am not on any bcp(do not tolerate synthethic estrogens)Hope that helps you.Private mail me if you want more info.Good luck and hang in there!

I have been on Aldactone for 1 yr, have noticed existing hair become lighter in color and the diameter of the hair shaft is smaller. I am also a nurse, and want to clarify the info given above. You must not take Aldactone if there is ANY chance you might become pregnant. It's not enough to just quit when you find out you're pregnant. The drug may remain in your system for a while after you stop taking it, and fetal sex organs are completely formed by 12 weeks gestation- some people (esp. those of us w/irregular cycles) may not know until then that they are pregnant. If you cannot take BCP, you must use a VERY reliable alternative method of birth control if you are sexually active.

I've been on Spiro about 18 months now, and my hair has got less. Still there though ......... my Endo also said that it takes about 1 year to get to maximum effect.

Just to respond to the spiro issue and when to stop taking it.The info I gave came straight from my endo's mouth. She said that the effects of spiro are quickly lost after you stop taking it.Now,how quickly that is in terms of days or weeks i do not know.My cycles are very regular and I would know fairly early on if I was late.I do agree with using a very reliable form of contraception if your cycles are irregular.

Okay have any of you tried "finasteride" known as Propecia, or tried "Eulexin" known as Flutamide or maybe tried Cyproteronacelate + ethinyloestradid? This is what I have researched but I don't know if any of you have tried it.

Hi,
I did try the cpa/estrogen combo(dianne 35)but couldn't tolerate the side effects.I actually saw a show last week on canadian televisionabout diane 35 .....a health warning to all users. It was made for acne sufferers but now it is prescribed for pcos as well. The warning stated that it was only indicated in cases of severe acne and not meant as just a contraceptive pill. The dangers of strokes among the teenage population taking this pill were very high.My endo says spiro remains the drug of choice to treat hirsutism....way befor eulexin or propecia.
