My question is if you guys have any experience with spironolocatone regarding excess facial hair?
I saw my Gyno yesterday and she prescribed me 2x50mg spironolocatone a day for the hair problems. Her experience is that she has treated couple patients with this medicine and have had great success with hair texture and growth, in other words all the hair in the wrong places turned to "peach fuzz" after 6-12 months of treatment.
So for now I am taking Yaz, Spiro and Met on daily basis to deal with PCOS.....I am hoping the BCP -Yaz helps a little bit too, since it seems that my hirsutism got worse after I got off the BCP I was taking
Thanks for any input!

I take the exact same medications as you. I take Spironolactone (100 mg in the morning, 50 mg at night every day), and Yasmin birth control. I have been taking these medications for 7 months.
I had coarse dark hairs growing on my chin, a few on my neck, some around my nipples, on my bikini line and upper thighs, and some dark peach fuzz below my belly button.
After seven months on Yasmin and Spiro, the hair below my belly button and around my nipples are pretty much GONE, the hair on my upper thighs is soft and blonde instead of dark and coarse, and my bikini line is much more normal. I am not growing new hair on my chin or neck, but the coarse hairs I had before starting the medications are still there, but they are thinner and lighter. I have been going for electrolysis for those, and now the problem is very minimal.
I hope the medication works well for you. I think it has worked well for me.
I only noticed side effects for the first few weeks. I felt dehydrated, tired, and emotional. That may have been from the birth control as well.
Sarah,
Thank you very much for your post! I am so glad you have had positive experience Now I dont feel discouraged and sad for taking so many meds per day
I was warned to drink more fluids on the Spiro as it is a diuretic.... Again I am glad you have had success and hope it works for me as well!

Stay positive
I was VERY against taking medication all my life, until I started missing my period for months at a time, and getting the *hair* issues. My hormone levels were VERY abnormal, and taking the Spiro and Yasmin lowered my testosterone around 63%, and normalized my other hormone levels. My body definitely needed these medications to get back to normal.
I would suggest beginning to do some sort of permanent hair removal method. I would recommend electrolysis. You will see results. It is amazing. At first, when I had to stop plucking my hair to do electrolysis, I couldn't believe how much hair I had. But after two appointments it was pretty much cut in half.

Which basically illustrates the point that if you're going to get rid of male-type hair you've got to get your testosterone down to normal female levels and keep it there. And your estrogen up to normal female levels and keep it there. And possibly remove some of the hair that's already coarsened and doesn't disappear of its own accord.
I've just been to the endocrinologist for the first time since being diagnosed when I was 17. No one ever referred me to one. After reading more about this syndrome I realize my doctors apparently don't care...I digress. The point is, she ran extensive blood tests. I haven't met with her yet for the followup but following my call to them to report swelling in the glands above my collarbone (on both sides) accompanied by pain, she apparently went ahead and read my tests. The nurse called saying I have Metabolic Syndrome and they prescribed Spironolocatone (two in the morning and two at night). I read that it's an anti-androgen (which is the male hormone that is the major player in the acne, hair growth etc.) I do not think this was the sole reason she placed me on this. I also notice it's a mild diuretic and is supposed to lower blood pressure. There were actually several benefits for me to receive from it. Present, I'm not on BCP (Yaz). I stopped taking it for the benefit of my blood work. I will be calling to ask if I should start taking it again. She also prescribed Metformin two times a day. The other is taken 2 in the a.m. and 2 in the p.m. I started taking them Tuesday night, and I've lost 4 lbs. No doubt water weight.
Does anyone have anything to add about the changes they've experienced while on these meds?
I am also on spiro. The dermatologist put me on it for hair loss on my scalp but said it would help with any unwanted hair as well. Only been on for about 4 months but have noticed a clearer complexion. I've also been having laser on my face and have had great success with that. I'm guessing the spiro has helped that as well. My problem is that when I went to 200mg per day of the spiro my periods (which had been regular without BCP since my last child was born) have become very irregular. I'm to the point where the last 3-4 weeks I've pretty much been bleeding non-stop. Not alot but enough to be annoying. I'm guessing this is why many are on BCP when taking spiro. I'm 47 year old and had resisted BCP for a while now because of the cardiovascular risks. Does anyone else have this problem? Thanks for any input.
