Unhappy Splenda

Does anyone eat or not eat this stuff? Have you ever had a reaction to it?
This stuff is absolute poison. And it's sucralose?
I googled it and a whole slew of stuff came up, people having very bad side effects hours after ingesting the stuff, from heart fluttering, to welts inches wide, sad.
Now I understand why folks stay away from any form of artificial sweetener.

I won't touch it. The fact that it's sugar altered with chlorine is enough for me. I don't like any artificial sweeteners.

I have been using it for months. Dh & I are on low carb - no sugar diets & when you want something sweetened this is suppossed to be what you use. I only use a bit, maybe everyother day, but DH uses it everyday for his coffee.

Now I am scared to continue use....I will have to do some research on this. Thanks for that info!

There is a lot of alarmist hype to wade through. In the end you have to decide if having something sweet is important enough for you to use an artificial sweetener.

There are natural alternatives, like xylitol and stevia. They take a bit of fiddling to figure out, but are perfectly safe alternatives to chemical sweeteners.

We use a lot of Splenda and Altern (Walmart's brand) in our house. DH is artificial sweetener sensitive and so is almost everyone on his side of the family (his dad, mom, brother, etc.) so he has to limit how much he has at one time. DD and I don't seem to have problems with it as long as we don't over do it, so I use it daily and DD gets it food as an occasional treat (we don't do sugar in either of our diets).

As was posted above there is a lot hype going around about Splenda and other sweeteners, so you have to take a lot of it with a grain of salt. My docs never seemed concerned about it, but one doc we know refuses to use artifical sweeteners at all and he is far from the "health nut" type. Most people have gotten the "Diet Mt. Dew is the same as antifreeze" or the "Artifical Sweeteners almost killed my relative" emails. Snopes has info on the unbelievabilty of those I think.

there is a lot of hype over splenda but i love it, and i will continue to use it till my dr tells me not to.

I'll pass.

I've lived this long not using fake sweeteners, I'll keep on.

The only altered sweetner I have trouble avoiding is high fructose corn syrup -- the stuff is pervasive!

I suppose it depends on what you believe is most dangerous...being fat or using artificial sweetner. I use splenda every morning in my coffee. To me, sugar makes me feel much worse than Splenda. I think nothing is totally proven. I personally have never experienced any ill effects from it, so I will continue to use it until I do. Good luck to you in finding out!

I've tried Splenda. I just don't like it. I didn't know it was made using chlorine, that's terrible...

Don't try cooking with regular Splenda. I tried to make a cake with it and it was sooo runny, unslavagable.

I use splenda in my tea, that's about it. Otherwise I try and stay away from sugar, you know, being a diabetic and all ...

Aspartame is the sweetener I really can't have; gives me migraine headaches within an hour of ingestion.
