Question Spontaneous periods?

Hello, all. I am new here, but certainly not new to PCOS. I have been diagnosed since 1999.

I realized something tonight: I never wondered exactly what it was that causes women with PCOS to have seemingly random periods. I've gone up to a year and a half between periods, and I never thought to wonder what exactly triggers them. Has anyone figured this out yet? I admit I am a bit behind the times in my PCOS research because for the last few years I have been dealing with my other diagnosis, fibromyalgia.

Any ideas or theories as to why a period will suddenly come along? Or are you ladies just as mystified as I am

Hi Zero Point,

to SC

My period was not absent, but it was 40 day cycles. My period suddenly became regular (every 28 days) after taking diflucan (med that kills yeast infection). At the time, I didn't realize that it was the diflucan that did it. I also had one day of a lot of walking, somewhere in those 28 days, and so I thought it was the exercise that did it.
I was so mad! We were on vacation, and I had been counting on having a 40 day cycle, and didn't bother to pack any feminine supplies, since we would be home before AF was due. They have never heard of tampons, or ultrathin pads in Peru, so I was stuck with the mongopads that were available in that country.

I know that many cysters have recurrent yeast infections, and it is possible that after using meds that kill yeast, that AF might arrive a few weeks later. Since most people aren't aware of the connection between yeast and PCOS, they probably don't realize that using the yeast med was what brought on AF. Just like I didn't realize at first that it was the diflucan that got my cycles regular.

Other things kill yeast too, like garlic. Maybe a cyster had a meal with a lot of garlic, killed the yeast off, and AF shows up 2 weeks later. Who would have guessed that the garlic they ate 2 weeks ago was what brought on AF?

To test my theory, my friend, who has not had a natural AF in 14 years volunteered to be my test case. She had tried Met a few years back, and after 3 months had a light 1 day AF.
In Feb '06, she started taking an herbal supplement that helps kill yeast in the body. Yes, one of the ingredients is garlic. She started with just 1 capsule a day (the recommended amount is 4/day).
2 weeks later, AF arrived. It was light, and didn't last very long, but it showed up. A couple months later, she tried it again, this time she took 2 a day. 1 week later, AF showed up, with more flow, and it lasted longer. She has taken it off and on since Feb '06, and last year she AF showed up 7 times. Hummmmmm, NO (natural) AF for 14 years, last year had AF 7 times. And the only thing that she was taking was the herbal yeast fighters.

I don't know for sure why AF shows up after months or even years of absense for other cysters. It would be very interesting to see if anyone else suddenly got AF a few weeks after taking a medication, or herb that kills yeast.

I have been wondering the same thing ! To date I haven’t had a period for 14 months, but just over three weeks ago I developed thrush I couldn’t understand why that happened because I am always careful about what I wash with and how much bread I eat etc ... so I put it down to the fact that I had just started back swimming. Anyway a week later I started to spot quite a bit but not really enough to get excited that I was at last having a period, this lasted about a week, when the thrush cleared up so did my spotting. The only thing that I can come up with is that swimming encouraged me to spot and my spotting encouraged the thrush. Does that make sense ??

Hmm...I always thought that it was because if an egg gets stuck and forms a cyst, the rest of the cycle doesn't happen? I guess I never thought too much about, it actually, which surprises me. I'm sure it was explained to me at one time, because I'm sure in the beginning I would've asked. But now I forget!
