it's been forever since i've been on it.. other says they noticed a difference (my mom) but i don't know if she was saying it because she really did notice or if she was just trying to be nice.. but what other medicine is good.. i went to the doctor a while back for a cold and just outta the blue the nurse started talking about my pcos.. i kinda love how people just dig at you until you finally confess to it.. and im like yeah so? by this time i had a fever and wasn't up for playing her games.. she said i'd have to go back to the doctor (2 hour drive from where i live) and got through all them dang tests to get a different medicine.. why can't they prescribe it to me?? i honestly don't feel like going through all that again i hated every minute of it and i became so depressed afterwards and i really don't want to go back through that again.. any suggestions on what works?

ohh thank you.. i wondered if they were just glancing at it or if someone had actually read it.. i was on i think 10 mg.. i wanted a stronger dose but they said i'd have to go all the way back to my doctor (2 hour drive) and go through all them tests just to get a stronger medicine when it's pretty obvious that i need it.

I am also on Spiro. I was first put on it from my PCP that put me on 25 mg. However, he had no intention of raising it. He also knew very little of PCOS so I decided to try an Endocrinologist (luckily I am able to go to specialists without referrals). Immediately, she bumped me to 50 mg which was 6 months ago. With 25 mg I wasn't seeing any difference but with 50 mg I am starting to notice small hairs popping up on my head. My husband thought was I crazy when I started screaming from the bathroom that I had little hairs. Although, my hair dresser confirmed it when she told me that she can tell there are little hairs coming up. I just had my 6 month follow up appointment with my Endo yesterday and she said that most people see better results with 100 mg of Spiro so she upped my dosage.
I grew up in a smaller town where some of the specialists were anywhere from 1 to 4 hours away. Although, is there a possibility that you could change your doctor that is 2 hours away currently to a doctor that is closer to you? Otherwise, would you consider having a follow up with the doctor every 6 months. During that 6 months, you could keep a notebook of what you'd like to discuss with them. If the list gets too big, maybe you could shorten the length between visits?

Not sure you are in the US or not. In the US, some primary care physicians treat PCOS and of course any of them can draw blood and evaluate the labs. It's up to the individual doctor whether he treats it or refers you to a specialist.
I've been on spironolactone for about a year, and I've noticed a big improvement in hair and stuff. (I used to have it ALL over, my stomach, breasts, BUTT [THAT was embarressing...])

i just dont know what to do anymore.. i don't want to drive almost 3 hours to get there.. because it takes literally a whole day.. by the time you get there and get waited on and see him and blah blah blah.. i just wish that my local doctor could call the endocrinologist i was seeing and tell him that i need to be bumped up to a higher dosage.. i need to be on like 50-100mg.. the 10mg just wasn't cutting it for me at all

I'm on 150 mg! I'm going to the endo next month to see about getting it switched...it's just not cutting the mustard anymore. I've been on it for 8 years now and it got better at first, then worse, and I think now I'm still on the tail end of worse...
I'm on 25mg spiro. I have noticed a difference in the back of my neck. It was really dark before and I have noticed that it has gotten lighter and the body acne has really improved. Makes me wonder if a higher dosage would make further improvements. . . . hmm. . .
see that's the thing.. i was only on 10 mg and i noticed somewhat of a difference.. i just wish that i could get on like 50 or even 100mg.. that would really make a difference..

kpants!!! What's the good word? Haven't seen you in forever!
Well at first the spiro was awesome. It really made a difference and I was so pleased. When I was in college I didn't take it for like 2 years, and the hair came back with a vengeance, plus some. Even though I'm back on it, my hair has fallen out a lot, and I just think I'm at the point of no return. I've also put on a lot of weight, so that's probably the issue. Who knows. I don't want to discourage anyone from taking it because for me, at one time, it really was a wonderful drug. I need to get my hormones checked again to find out what the deal is.
I see an endo next month...I'll see if he can get me on Flutamide.
Abovetheextreme-
Can you find another Primary doctor that is close to where you are, and is more sympathetic? PCOS puts you at high risk for uterine cancer, I would recommend finding a better doctor that really puts your health first.
My dr. prescribed spiro. I'm apprehensive about taking it because there seem to be a lot of side effects. I did some research online and apparently drinking too much water could be bad for you. I'm addicted to water -- I drink about 12-15 glasses a day. Is that too much?
