Has anyone here ever taken St. John's Wart? My MD does not believe in anti-depressants and told me to take St. John's Wart instead. I did start taking it while I decide what I want to do next about tx. The bottle says to give it 2 months, but after almost 2 weeks I think I feel worse than when I started.
Thanks for any input.

It didn't work for me either. I took it and went "manic"... too up instead of down. Be careful with this stuff. It's a drug, even if you can buy it over the counter.
As the pp said, it is a drug. I don't personally take it but good advice I got was to start anything like this at half the minimum dose given on the box and slowly increase till you find the right amount for you.
Well my MD did tell me to take it, and hopefully he was aware of all my meds when he told me. I did start at the smallest dose on the bottle, which was less than the MD told me. I did this because it upsets my stomach pretty bad (getting better). So I have been slowly uping the dose. The MD told me to take more than is actually listed on the bottle. I am not going to do that. I had a hard time with ambition motivation for life before I started. Now I have a hard time even getting out of bed at all. I didn't think I could lose any more ambition until I started this stuff.

I'm not your doctor, BUT! ...from what I know an anti-depressant usually is expected to kick in after about 2 weeks. If you feel worse on St. Johns Wort (and it sounds like you are not doing well to me!) I'd try something else. Can you see a psych? Who can give you a perscription that will work. Psych drugs are very individual, some will work for you, some won't and you can usually tell within a couple of weeks. When I found the one that worked for me, it was like "bingo" and I felt so, SO!, much better. Depression and PCOS are no joke, you need to treat it like a real illness...
I did try it a long time ago and to be honest I found it made my mood swings worse than ever... I only stayed on it for about 6 weeks and then I stopped it.
Be VERY VERY careful on St. Johns wart. The side effects are dangerous, and if it is upsetting your stomach it is a warning sign that it is NOT going to be working for you. It is also dangerous to the cardiovascular system, produces mania, and increased sensitivity to light. It can also interact with some PCOS meds.
