Namely because I'm not even sure I should be here. The whole long story with all the gory details?
I never got my period. When I was sixteen my mother dragged me (kicking and screaming) to the endocrinology clinic at Children's Hospital in Montreal. They did some blood tests and an ultrasound, and from what I remember the gist of it was: very small uterus, and too many male hormones, but normal thyroid (as I have been obese a long, long time). To my knowledge they never diagnosed me with anything, but this doesn't surprise me. It's Quebec. Anyone who's lived there knows there are just some things about the place, you can go in gushing blood from a half dozen wounds and half the time they hand you some bandaids and send you home. When you find a good doc you hand on for dear life.
At any rate, I managed to evade my mother's well intentioned poking and proding and life continued happily (and period-less) for another ten years. Then we get to last June, where I woke up one morning and- surprise! Got my first period. At 26. What joy. I managed to claw my way to the doctor towards the end of August, because I live in backwards world and want to know why this is happening after all these years. He didn't say anything about PCOS and I didn't ask (just inquired as to the predictability of the cycle), and I was sent for an ultrasound. Went back in November (it's Canada. Free, but you wait) and the ultrasond turned up 'blah blah blah PCOD distribution'. Whee! Sent for blood tests, and... everything's normal. WTF? Hormone levels are well in the normal range, blood sugar is fine (I'd fasted). No insulin resistance. Yet I have what appear to be signs of it- weight that's impossible to drop, too much hair (and dark! I'm dark blonde, I should not be growing black hair anywhere on my person) where I don't want it and not enough where I do (my hair started literally falling out when I was about 14), dark patches of skin (which also turned up when I was about 13 or 14, now I think of it), etc.
I can't seem to get a straight yes or no out of my doctor on this PCOS thing. The best I got was 'the ultrasound was highly indicative of PCOS' and a script for metformin, so I'm running with it. And here I am. Confused, not sure where or if I belong, and hoping to hell the met does something for me. I did get my period the day after I started, which in all probability has nothing to do with it, but I take it as a good omen.
And just from looking around I'd say I'm an odd duck around these parts anyhow, as it is my mission in life to NOT procreate. (I love kids. Adore them. They're all cute and loud and cuddly and easy to please and asking questions, and I love it especially when they go home when I'm tired. ) In this respect I am grateful that my body is so messed up, it makes my mission that much easier.
Are you still in Montreal?
Let us know where you are now and maybe there is a cyster near you that has a good Endocrinologist.
You do sound like you have a lot of the symptoms, but some doctors are not very familiar with PCOS and yours may not want to give you a dx of it unless he is sure.
If you can get any of your test results, there are a lot of references on the site to see what the results mean.
I hope you find out what you need to soon. You'll like it here, we all take care of each other and there doesn't seem to be such a thing as TMI. lol

Kat - He hasn't mentioned mentioned that one, and upon a bit of googling it doesn't sound at all familiar. I think he might be at a loss and is going with what might be the most likely thing right now. Just to see what happens. I have no idea. I love the man, he's brilliant, but he leaves me feeling confused sometimes. -.-
Fuzzy Bear - Sadly, no. I love Montreal dearly, but circumstances lead me to be living in Ottawa for a while.
One of the things that is awesome about my doctor is that he gives you a copy of everything. I have a copy of the ultrasound results, referrals to wherever he sends me, blood test results- everything. Still slightly confused because I looked it up and some things don't appear (or more likely, are called something different) on the sheet I've got, or it's on a different scale to what's posted, but the 'normal' range is given on the results and between that and hunting on the internet... yeah. Bloodwork is all normal. Mainly smack in the middle of the normal range, or on the low end. Which leads me to want to get my file from the Children's Hospital and see what those other results looked like. The ultrasound, otoh, says my ovaries are way larger than normal, from what I've been able to look up. Is there such a thing as variation on a theme?
Oh, well. We'll see how the met works out. I'm up to 1000 mg starting today, and I'm getting my diet back on track (I'm also 'blessed' with IBS, between that and trying to lose weight and control my blood sugar, I can eat... grass. And water. And fibrous bread. ). Whatever's wrong with me, I hope it straightens out a little.
Welcome to SC. You, by the way, are hilarious. I love to read your post, even when it's just facts. You remind me a LOT of myself, and I hope you find some answers here. It's not the easiest thing in the world, but I know you'll do fine. If you need anything, feel free to scream. Everyone here is great to work with, and I trust the answers I find on the board more than a LOT of stuff I hear elsewhere. Again, welcome and good luck!

If your doctor is a good one, take a list of questions to your next appt. There are a couple of lists you can find on this board. If he is internet-savvy give him this site. There is even a board with a sticky just for our doctors.
Nice to know I'm eating rabbit food with another cyster lol
