I've been on Met for 10 mos now, and I'm just at 1000 mg. I stayed on 500 mg for several mos, then talked to my dr about upping the dosage.

Post Met dosage

I've been on Metformin for about 4 years it has been a wonder drug for me. My Endocrinologist had me start it very slowly, to avoid side effects. Like this:

Met Dosage
First three days: 1/2 pill once a day w/ Breakfast (250mgs a day total)

Next three days: 1/2 pill w/ Breakfast and 1/2 pill with Lunch (500mgs a day total)

Next three days: 1/2 pill w/ each meal (750mgs a day total)

Next three days: 1 pill w/Breakfast, 1/2 pill w/Lunch, 1/2 pill w/Dinner (1,000mgs a day total)

Next three days: 1 pill w/Breakfast, one pill w/ Lunch, 1/2 pill w/ Dinner (1,250mgs a day total)

Next three days: 1 pill with each meal (1500mgs a day).
Later on I moved up to 2000mgs a day

You can change up dosage every five days instead of three if you experience side effects. Good luck.

I would definitely give a call to the doc. I think if you start right with the 1000 you are going to have killer gastrointestinal effects and then you'll not want to take it at all. So, like a PP poster said, I'd start with just a small amount and build up. As far as going over the 1000 your doc recommended I'd talk to her first for sure.
