I'm sure this has been posted before, but I'm new and just haven't quite figured out how to navigate all the posts yet, so sorry!!!
Anyways, just had my follow up with my dr. this morning and he put me on met at 500 mg a tablet. He said to take one for about a week or two and then gradually increase it until I was able to take three a day. Any tips on taking this? I know there are side effects, so I'm wondering if anyone has found ways to limit those? Anything that I should know? This is all happening too quickly for me and I'm feeling overwhelmed so anything at this point would be a GREAT help!
Thank you!
Jackie

It can be overwhelming!! I just went thru the same thing last month! I was able to get to 1500mg in 3 weeks though. It was hard in the beginning, as well as each time I increased my dose. I did have some GI upset- mainly a lot of nausea. What has helped me personally is taking the met immediately before I eat. I'm also watching what I am eatting as I noticed high fat, high carb, and high sugar foods make the stomach even more upset, and often resulting in having to run to the bathroom more So I kinda said "good-bye" to those foods.
Good luck to you!!!!

I started at 500mg/day, and it was not enough. I noticed a lot of dizzyness, especially when I got overheated (I started in August). I, too, found the high fat/sugar/carb foods to make me sick in the beginning. Eventually my body overcame that, and a month later, when I had to up my dose, I had no side effects that I noticed. Good luck!
Congrats on the met. There are some nasty GI side effects. Make sure you eat! The best thing is to eat several small meals. This will help with the nausea. Stay away from bad carbs and high saturated fats if you can. I highly suggest a multivitamin (make sure it has all the B complex vits), milk thistle, and omega fatty acid supplements. This will help too. I always take at least one dose right before bed..so I sleep away the bad side effects. You may also feel super tired at first when you start. Good luck and feel free to ask any other questions.

Dx-2004 while ttc #2
Currently: 2000mg metformin
Not officially ttc, but not preventing!
I also just started Met recently, but am extremely tired with it. One 500 mg dose is ok, but whenever I try to up to 2 a day, I can't deal with it. The Dr. wants me to get to 3 a day. Any ideas. I just want to go back to bed shortly after I get up and have a very hard time staying awake. It is making working difficult.
Wow. I just started met last month, but my Dr sent me straight to 3 a day. It was nasty, nasty side effects. For me I found taking it AFTER I eat worked better than before, but maybe it's different for everyone. BTW, I was not taking the extended release. I start that tomorrow, so it may very well change.

Clomid round 5
Metformin ER 1500 mg
I started with 1 500mg tablet with my largest meal (supper), waited a few days (usually 4), added another with lunch, waited 4 days and added the 3rd pill with breakfast. So, I was up to 1500 mg within 2 weeks. The only thing I noticed was the first couple days that I had some diahhrea (sorry if tmi) after meals and then it went away. After that, everything was great. I loved being on it. I'm pregnant and will start again after the birth and breastfeeding.

Thanks! He wants me to try two a day. Preferrably breakfast and dinner. So I started that today. I just took my dinner one and ate dinner and so far haven't felt anything. But from what I've heard it's the second dose that affects most people, so we'll see! Not really looking forward to it though!
Have a good weekend!

Just wanted to say hello and welcome. I'm one of the lucky ones i guess, i take my met halfway through meals and have never had any gi upset no matter what i eat, i did feel really tired the first month or so though, getting better with that now. You may want to check out the metformin thread for more info, good luck!
