Default Starting Metformin - A few ?s

I just got a prescription from the doctor yesterday to start 500 mg. He wrote it for "Metformin XR 500 mg" and said he was writing it for the extended release, but I could get the generic if I wanted. I'm a little confused because I thought the Metfomin WAS the generic, and Glucophage was the trade name.

Anyway, assuming I have a choice, what should I get? Is the extended release easier in the stomach and does it come in generic? I'm off to the pharmacy in a little bit, but I'm sure you girls know more about it than a pharmacist, so I thought I'd ask!

Thanks!

BTW, I am going to work up to 4 pills a day (or whatever I can tolerate), then take that dose for a month, then start Clomid. Has anyone had success with something like that?

XR is extended release. I have never used it but many sisters tolerate it much better then the regular met.

Good Luck!

Met XR is definately better for lessening side affects... I hardly got any with XR met.

I have never bothered to try normal met. Why would I? You have to try to remember to take 3 times a day during a meal.

XR - you just take 3 or 3.5 tabs after dinner thats it. I have them on the dinner table so less likely to forgot.

I have even taken them not on a full stomach and to be honest got no sick feelings etc.. The only time I may feel a bit nauseas is if I leave it too LONG between meals with an empty stomach...which you should not do anyway with INsulin resistance as your body thinks your starving and keeps the fat on.

6 small meals a day like on Body for LIfe books is better for IS than the normal 3 big meals.. lots of protein, fibre and vegies and some fruits. and lots of water..no sweets or high GI carbs and you cant go too wrong...

basmati rice and sweet rice are good potato replacemetns...
Multigrain bread instead of white (I never used to have white bread anyway yuk).

Miss potatos though

I am on Metformin 500mg XR. That is the generic. I am also working my way up and so far, besides the first couple of days, I have had very little in the way of s/e. GL!

All I have to say is I sure hope the pharmacist would know your questions about metformin....lol. Sorry, i'm a pharmacy student, and I know we get drilled on drugs and should definitey know about meds typically used in diabetes (which is what metformin is used in).

The XR version is easier on the stomache etc. Metformin is the generic name, and I think your doctor just confused you by the way he told you "Metformin XR" and you can get the generic. Metformin is the generic...that is right

you may need to change what you are eating with it. Also, try taking it in the morning with breakfast and tne make sure you eat frequently throughout the day, I find I get the most nauseous when my stomach is empty.

Hello Ladies,
so my Metformin mystery has FINALLY been solved. My doctor switched me to reuglar metfformin and it is not giving me any problems. I feel okay, no nausea or vomitting. I think my body just did not like Metformin XR! strange how XR is suppose to be easier on you. I guess we all are different!

Sana =)

I too am new here! I first want to say thank you so much for all the information!! I was wondering, my Dr wants to start me on Metformin soon, should I be taking anything in combination with it? Of course I will ask my Dr, but what should I ask my dr if I should take? I have heard I should take prenatal vitamins, but anything else? I really appreciate your help!!

I just started Metformin today. He gave me Metformin ER 750. 1 pill a day for a week and then twice a day. So I'll end up with 1500 a day. I am praying this works for me! I am very optimistic about it! Good luck!
