Hi all! I decided to become a part of this site even though I haven't been offically diagnosed with PCOS yet. Even though I'm only 19, I've assumed I've had it for years (my mother and her sister have it, and I have many of the more "classic" symptoms.)
Long story as short as I can make it: I finally went to the doctor at my college in May but decided to get blood tests done at my home in Germany since it's free with the miliarty (woohoo! But when I went to the (American) doctor here, she told me that all of my lab results are "perfect" so she said I don't have it. (My mom and aunt both had "perfect" labs, too, but the doctor wouldn't hear it.)
I go back to school soon and am going to work with the doctor there, but until then, I can't help but feel really depressed that this issue hasn't been resolved. I'm also worried that no one in the states is going to believe that I have PCOS either.
Did anyone else here get "perfect" tests back, too? Or have you been told by doctors that you didn't have PCOS? The only tests I can remember off the top of my head were: testosterone, cholestoral, FSH/LH, thyroid, prolactin, and a bunch of other tests for my hirsutism.
Thank you all for having such a wonderful support system available!

My lab results were not way off, but my Doc said I do have PCOS (dxed from symptoms including IR). It really depends on the individual doc, type of doc and how much experiece and knowledge they have in regards to PCOS.

Reese,
Mine were all fine except the fasting 2 hour oral glucose tolerance test, which showed abnormal insulin levels. Did you have that one done?
Love and all the best,
Michelle

I know how you feel to not have a doctor listen to you. I kept complaining to several different doctors that I thought something was wrong and all they would do it put me on the pill and tell me it was my horomones and that I was overweight. They didn't even seem to beleive me when I told them that I exercise and try to eat right. Eventually I got fed up w/ the doctors I had been seeing and decided to go to someone new. She was very nice, listened to all my concerns, and suggested some lab work after I had a miscarraige. Well, the results came back and she told me I had PCOS, which honestly I had never heard of. Now I'm on medication and trying to make some lifestyle changes. So, I guess what I'm trying to tell you is learn from my mistakes. Find a new doctor if you can, it seems not many will listen and will say it's our fault or that it's nothing. But, it isn't. There are doctors out there that will listen and will run the right tests and will diagnose you. Good luck!

Hi all! Thanks for your responses. I don't think I had the glucose test you mentioned. I did have to fast for 12 hours before some of my labs, but I don't think that's what you're talking about. I have one last appointment today with my doctor here. After my lab results came back, she told me that it's just because I'm overweight and that I should just get on birth control. So I'm definately going to a new doctor as soon as I get back to the US. I'm off to read some fo the forums about metformin, since my mom mentioned it to my doctor. And I'll look into that other fasting test, too.

Welcome to SC! I don't remember what tests I did, but before I did some tests. The doc I was seeing diagnosed me purely on the symptoms I was having. Then I went to get bloodwork done. Hopefully you'll find a doctor who will help you figure out what's going on. Good luck!

Welcome here! I had the classic symptoms on my bloodwork when I was dx'd in 2001. At my last set of bloodwork, everything came back normal, and this was before I started Met. My doc forgot that I had PCOS and didn't believe me when I said I had it! I had corrected most of the symptoms by changing my diet, which was so great.

Okay, so I went to the hospital today, and a new doctor basically said the same thing everyone else has been saying. Only this doctor also said that I shouldn't take metformin because it's "only" to lower testosterone levels or for people who are ttc, and mine were already low! So I didn't get put on meds...again. Not even bcp. Argh. Thanks for letting me do a quick rant.

My results from my family Dr weren't that out of wack, so for him it was in the normal range. I then got sent to a fertility/gyno specialist for other reasons. After some testing she took one look at my chart and said you my dear have PCOS. Then she looked at my body and pointed out certain symptoms like carrying my weight around my waist, increased facial hair, skin tags... So I guess what I am saying is always go for a second opinion, and don't quit until you find the answers you are looking for. Tell them it runs in the family. Good luck and don't give up, somebody will have the answers for you. Take care
