Default Still getting used to the idea....

Hi everyone!! Newbie here. Just diagnosed officially last week. Went for my blood work up today and they took 10 - yes TEN - vials of blood! I was beginning to wonder if they were going to test the blood or donate it!

Anyway, I am suppose to start Met tonight and I'm a little nervous. I've heard of all of the side effects and I am dreading them. Is it true that Met can help me lose weight?!?!!? If so, I will tolerate whatever may come. Also, I heard that you are suppose to go for monthly blood tests when on Met because it can mess with your liver enzymes - anyone ever heard of this?

I'm still feeling a little overwhelmed right now. Thanks for all the help.

Mel

Hey! Welcome!

A lot of people do get the side effects from Met but there are some who tolerate it pretty well. It made me nauseous which subsided once I started taking it with a meal. It also caused stomach cramping and some other...uh...nasty bathroom issues. If that happens to you just carry some immodium and/or some pepto and that'll help a lot.

As for the test every month...I'm not sure. I didn't/haven't had them every month. I used to have my bloodwork done every 6 mos. I had the initial bloodwork done and then 6mos later they retested to make sure things were more balanced & then I had it done again 6mos after that to monitor. I haven't been tested for anything in a loooong time though. I'm actually requesting next week that my doctor do more bloodwork since I haven't been checked for anything in years.

The Met definitely helped me drop weight. Once I became more active (I started eating MUCH better and taking kickboxing 2-3 times a week) the weight melted off. I went from 193 to about 145-150 in less than 9 months.

Jess,
How much did you lose in the first month (if you can remember)?

Hi, when i started on the met i had the horrible side effects too i would eat and half an hour later i would pass the food, couldnt keep a single bite in me lol (sorry if tmi) i spoke to my gp about it and he told me to take folic acid tablets, they helped reduce the side effects and i started feeling much better within a day or so. hope that helps
have a great day
