Default Stopping GlucXR and Miscarriage Question

Hi everyone,

I was not really sure where to post this question and I don't want to alarm anyone, but I am just trying to find some answers. I probably never will but here it goes anyway,

Before being on GlucXR I had 8 1/2 years of infertility and mc my first pg at 16weeks. I was able to conceive on my own after that and had a baby girl at 23 weeks. When ttc again I got pg the first month and mc again at 5 weeks. Got pg 3 months later and had a full term baby girl with the help of a cerclage. My cycles were irregular ( 21days one month and 52 the next) but I was obviously ovulating part of the time. I went on GlucXR 1000mg, a year ago in Jan. and in Nov. went off the BCP to ttc again. My cycles were more regular on the glucXR but other than that did not notice any other changes. I got pg after 4 cycles and was very afraid to go off because of the risk of mc. I saw a Peri at 9w5 days for my cerclage and discussed the glucXR with him and he said that I was almost through my first trimester and since I had not history of GD then he thought there was no need to continue taking it and recommended that I quit. I was a little hesitant but I trust this guy he is one of the best in his field, and since I was on a low dose anyway decided to wean myself off of it. I decreased down to 500 mg for about 3 days and then quit. (maybe that wasn't long enough) So I quit when I was 10w4d. I went in for a scheduled OB appointment on 4-24 and they could not find a hearbeat. I had a sono and the baby was measuring 10w5d and I should have been 12w5d. I was devestated. I had a D & C done on 4-25 and the pathology report came back with no abnormalities.

My question is: Has anyone else who has mc after stopping met mc close to the date you quit taking it? Because there is such a corralation between stopping and when the baby died with my mc that I was wondering if anyone else had experienced the same thing.

I am wondering if I should even go back on the GlucXR since I got pg before without it, or if I should go back on it to regulate my cycles more and just not quit taking it. My regular OB would allow me to stay on it if I chose to. Like I said I am just looking for some answers where there probably are none but you can't blame a girl for trying.

Any input would be helpful,

Thanks,

I am sorry about your loss. My RE made me quit taking Met for each pregnancy and I m/c each one. The next time I get pregnant she will keep me on Met she said. I am going to be angry if the next time works because each pregnancy I have asked to stay on the Met and they said no. That is up to you if you want to stay on Met. Does it benefit you? For me if regulates my cycles, so I am staying on it. Good luck!

The first one about 6 wks after taking Met. This last one only a couple of days. The problem is we will never know if that is what caused it. It is very frustrating though, I know.

Thank you,

I know, it is SO hard not knowing what happened. I guess I just want to fix it. You go over everything you did and ate trying to find and answer. How do you let it go? It will never go away I know, it does get a little easier as time goes by. I still think of our first little boy that we lost, we wanted him so bad after all the infertility, but then we wouldn't have my daughters probably because we would not have tried again so soon who knows. I guess whats done is done. I just need to let go and move on. Thanks for listening to my blubbering.

I think about it constantly. It does not help me that everybody I know is pregnant. It just reminds me that I am not. It is soo hard. Just thinking about it consumes about 3/4 of my day. I wish that we were not cursed with PCOS and that m/c has to go right in hand with it. It is not fair.

Andra,

Almost the exact same thing happened to me. I stopped Glucophage at my Dr.s request when I was 5weeks pg. We had an u/s at 5w3d and everything was looking great. At 7w3d I had another us that showed the baby stopped developing at around 6weeks, but we also saw the heartbeat although it was really slow. I ended up having a miscarriage 2 days after my second u/s. I also didn't wean myself off the Glucophage I just stopped it. I was taking 1700mg per day. I had no idea that the glucophage needed to be weaned. Next time I get pg I will definitely take the Glucophage through the first trimester at least.

hi,
I was on metformin(2000mg) also, and quit taking it per dr's request as soon as i found out i was preg.... (around 5wks), i went for my 6wk us and the heartbeat was there.. went for a us at 8wks and there was no heartbeat and the development of the baby was just around 7wks....my dr states that he wouldnt change a thing the next time i get preg... (by stopping the metformin) but if or when i get preg again i am going to request that he keeps me on it, just to see)

I just miscarried on 4/15 with misoprostal..... due to not miscarrying on my on for 2wks... of course the dr did another us to confirm there was no heartbeat again....

i have alot of trust in my dr.. he is one of the best... he is nationally acclaimed for his research and work with pcos...

I have been bleeding off and on for the last 3wks.... dr states that with any pregnancy fullterm or miscarriage that it is normal to bleed on and off for 4 wks or so....

by the way my name is anna, i have been a member for awhile, but this is my first post... hope to talk to you more frequently....

Question Stopping Met

Sorry about your m/c's after stopping Met ladies. How awful

I can't figure out why some Drs let us stay on Met & others don't?? My RE wanted me to stop Met when I became pg. I resisted; I wanted to at least wait to see if my Beta was rising. It wasn't. At least I can't blame my 2nd m/c on stopping Met.

It is scary, a tough decision to make. I wish more research would be done on pg & Met so they could all just agree that it is for sure safe!!!!!

Just thought I would put my 2 cents worth in here.... I was PG last year, and as soon as it was confirmed that i was PG the dr pulled me off the met and put me on insulin (safer for baby they said) I'm type 2 diabetic.... well when i went in at 8 weeks (from conception) there was no heart beat and baby measured 5w6d a couple of days after the dr pulled me off the met..... 2 weeks later i MC'd. I did some research and found that met was completely safe during pregnancy and I will continute to take it when i get PG again....
