I'm sorry this happened. Since you just started Met, it's perfectly fine to stop cold turkey...the drug hasn't built up enough in your system to warrent weaning yourself off it. Be GLAD your Dr is taking precautions like this..the last thing you want is for them to be non-chalant and you end up with serious liver problems down the road.
There are other alternatives if Met doesn't work out: Actos & Avandia. I know they still require liver testing for these, but my understanding is they are not as heavily processed by the liver and may be adequate for you. There are differences in terms of how they work (Met decreases glucose cell production by the liver, Actos & Avandia work at the cell level to decrease glucose uptake) and there is slight weight gain associated with them, but otherwise they essentially serve the same purpose and that is to regulate insulin. Ask your Dr.
