Default Stories of Met helping with ovulation, please

I took Met for 3 months and I did lose 30+ lbs but it didn't help me ovulate in that time period. Did I just not give it long enough?

Has Met helped any of you start ovulating?

I was diagnosed in 2005. In August 2007, I came off birth control patch and I have only had 1 period (October 2007), during the last 6 months. I have an appointment scheduled with Dr. this week, ...hoping he will begin met to help with ovulation! I will post update later on results....I am hoping it will create quick, healthy ovulation, leading to the creation of a preciou little one!

I started met on 12/14 and af arrived on 1/1. For the first time EVER, I had a 29 day cycle! This cycle (Jan. 1-present), I also took 80 mgs. of soy on cd 3-7. For the first time in over a year, I actually o'd. Not sure if it was the soy or the met...but I'm officially in the 2ww.

How did you know you weren't ovulating? Were you using OPK's?

You might not have given it long enough. My doctor said it can take up to 6 months to a year to see full results of Met.

Apparently it worked for me! I haven't used BC for 9 years and I am now pg!! All natural, no intervention except for the metformin. I started Nov. 2006 at 500mg and it didn't do anything. They upped me in July 2007 to 1,000mg and I started losing weight (very little). I still did not have regular periods so I assumed I didn't ovulate. Fast forward to Jan. 14--surprise BFP!! We were in total shock!

I lost 5 pounds the first week on 1000 mg of Met. After 2 months, still no AF even though I had lost 10 pounds. They bumped it up to 2000 mg in October. I got AF 2 weeks later. I've had two 38 day cycles since then.

I've been using BBT, CM, CP and CBEFM. The monitor starts at low on CD6 and then reads high from CD8-24. I got a peak the first month but not the second. I know I o'd both months from everything else I'm tracking.

I just got a script for Clomid which I start on Monday. Dr. wants me to O closer to CD14 and not CD26. If my hormones are as stubborn as I am, we'll see if it happens.

I believe that the though, for Metformin, is to help your body use less insulin and to lose weight, and in losing weight, you reduce PCOS syptoms and in some individuals, completely reverse PCOS (if enough weight is lost). If you've only taken the medication for 3 months, I would give it quite a while longer. When I went on it, it took me a long time to lose weight and I actually was prescribed Metformin in combination with Flutamide before I was able to lose weight. It took me over 6 months and I lost weight very gradually (30 pounds at first and then after a year, I lost 20). Keep in mind, however, this was in combination with exercise and eating 6 small meals a day rather than big meals.
Once you have lost some weight, your body MAY start ovulating again. You may have to lose a significant amount of weight, however.
    I hope this helps!

I think it's different for every person, but somebody told me once it would probably take 6 months to a year.

I've never had regular cycles at all unless I was on bcp, but to me they don't really help my hormone problem so I refuse to get on them now. But I've been charting & temping for the past 6mos & from what I could tell I never o'd (my temps were always around 97.2 & never rose above. But I started 1500mg/day met on 12/31 after a month & a half long period which finally stopped & finally o'd this past week (around 1/22(my bday!!) or 1/23) when I had a temp shift from 97.2 to 97.8 which stayed that high for 3 days before it dropped back down to 97.2 & I started af again. So while I only had a 3day LP, I at least know that I o'd which gives me hope that the longer I'm on it, the better my chances of conceiving when I'm finally ready! If you want more info on temping, I highly suggest Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler, it explains all about it. But doctors do say that OPK's don't work that well for women w/PCOS, not sure why, but they don't. Good luck to everyone ttc!!!
