Hi! Is the flutamide by prescription or can you get it at the pharmacy/GNC? Thanks!
Flutamide is a prescription medication. It is actually used to treat prostate cancer. It lowers the testosterone levels in males and females.
My first Endocrinologist would not prescribe it. It can rarely cause liver failure. I had liver function tests every four weeks for the first five months and now it's every three months. When studies like this one come out, maybe our doctors won't be so afraid to try it. I went on it as a last resort-It works for me.

Hi Allison,
Thanks for posting that study! I'm just curious, what additional alleviation of symptoms did you receive by adding Flutamide, that you did not get from Metformin alone?
Thanks,
Amanda

Amanda,
I was on Metformin for three years, then suddenly my testosterone levels started going up. According to my last Endocrinologist, still within normal range. My PCOS symptoms were increasing; more hair loss, weight gain, acne, facial hair growth and longer cycles.
My testosterone levels should stay at about 22. When they go above that I can really tell. I must be extra sensitive to it. They had gone up to 56.
Now that I am on flutamide my testosterone has gone back down to 23. My hair loss has stopped! That has never happened with any treatment
My cycles are shorter 28-30 days, acne cleared, facial hair is growing in slower and I am not gaining any weight. My cholesterol numbers look great. I have lost what I gained, only about seven pounds, but that's major to me. Considering all the time I spend at the gym. I go before and after work.
I am really excited about the results of taking this combo of medicine. Some of us need Diet, exercise and medication to control our PCOS symptoms. Well at least we can educate ourselves and be proactive about it.

Wow. Thanks for sharing. I'm one of those women who needs the meds along with diet and exercise. That combination of three seems to be the answer for me.
Still, I am losing my hair like there's no tomorrow, and I was starting to think nothing would help.
My doctor told me to go up to 2000mg of Met a day, but I haven't done that yet. I seem to be at 28 day cycles at 1500. I still have the oily skin and annoying hair loss, though, so I am definitely going to ask about Flutamide.
Thanks again for sharing. I love that we have this place to come and offer our successes and ask our questions.

I'm glad to see flutamide getting more recognition in the treatment of PCOS.
When I was Dx'd you practically had to get it on the black market, if you were a woman who wanted to take it. (not really, but you get the idea...I had to go to 8 doctors before I found someone who would Rx it for me. The first 7 thought I was some crazy lady who needed to stop reading stuff on the internet. )
I never took Met, but flutamide worked great for me.

Kat did you take flutamide for a period of time to stop hair loss and then stop? is it that once you got your hormone levels under control/lost weight combined with the flutamide you then didn't need it anymore? how did that all work?

Correct, I took flutamide for a year, maybe less. My hair issues were under control, and I had lost almost 90 pounds, so I went off the med to see if things would 'stay normal' and they did (until I gained weight again.)
Even after I gained, I didn't have to go back on...I lost the excess weight, and my hair stopped falling out.
The 'un' wanted hair was laserd
