Okay, with my IR I am finding that I am totally ADDICTED to sugar. Not addicted as in "I like it a whole lot", but as in "when I stop eating it I have withdrawals". I know sweets are so bad for my insulin levels and for my blood sugar, but I find myself craving them all the time. Actually, I originally found out I was IR/hypoglycemic because I told my dad that "sometimes if I go too long without eating something with sugar in it I feel sick" and he said I should get checked for diabetes. There are times (particularly in the morning) when I find that the thought of non-sugary food almost makes me feel nauseous. Like my stomach doesn't even want to digest anything that isn't sweet. Even with my dinner I usually have a glass of sweet tea, and lately I've been wanting less and less of my meals. When I stop eating sweets, I feel "yucky", and of course since they make my blood sugar spike & crash, I find myself eating them MUCH more frequently than I would eat normal food. I almost don't even have an appetite for regular food. Am I alone? I know SOMEONE has to have been there before! Is there a medical reason for this?
HELP!

I hear you. Hi, My name is Tara and I'm addicted to sugar. I don't know what causes it, but I do know that Metformin helped me so much, by controlling my insulin. Maybe it's worth a try for you. The thing is you seem to lose the physical need for the sugar, its just the emotianl need that some times gets me. (There are theses Twizzler things called Twerps, holy cow I can eat a whole big bag of those things...) Ask your doc about this, and try to get some Met, it may work for this, cause it worked for me who used to wake up with a melted Klondike Bar on my face.

I only have this problem right before my period. Before I was diagnosed with PCOS, I only have 3-4 a year, but now that I am on Glucophage I have one every month soooooo, I get horrible cravings every month now!!.
My name is Beth and I am a recovering sugar addict.
I know it seems contradictory, but what I had to do was stop eating anything that had sugar (including ingredients that end in "ose", "ol", corn syrup, maple syrup, honey, etc) or any artificial sweetner in it.
Let me tell you the first 3-5 days were really, hard but so worth it. I had a headache, I was very cranky and moody, and boy oh boy did I have some nasty cravings.
Here's what I did to get through it:
- drink lots and lots of water especially during a craving
- if the craving didn't go away I would have a piece of fresh fruit with some protein (cheese or a slice of ham, put some almond butter on the fruit, etc)
- snacked on protein and veg (cauliflower, brocolli, celery, asparagus, small amounts of tomatoe and cucumber) between meals
- ate protein (fish, meat, poultry, nuts & seeds, etc) and veg (anything except potatoe or corn) at every meal
- some form of exercise every day (helps increase insulin sensitivity)
- started taking Chromium GTF and worked my way up to 800 mcg a day (took this because I can't take Met)
I would like to encourage my cysters to break the sugar addict cycle. You will feel so much better, have so much more energy, and your moods will probably improve too.

Iam Lee and i am addicted to sugar as well. I just started taking Met and my cravings are getting better but they are still come when i am least expecting them. My weakness is sugar and the bad part is that my husband is the exact same way. I have stopped buying any candy, cookies, soft drinks but he comes home from work with some Dr. Pepper or something and it is so hard to say no but i am learning that water can be my best friend.
Thanks Bethers for the suggestions, i will try them

Me too! I actually think sugar is like a drug. And with me being good - its an all or nothing thing. If I completely cut myself off, I can do well. But if I try to "cut back"...well, forget it.
And darnit...I've been on a chocolate binge since Halloween...

I agree about adding more protein to your diet. It'll help keep your blood sugar at a more even level. Even if you don't start removing sugar from your diet yet, try to eat protein at every meal. Then, start to get yourself off of sugar.
I'm still working on it....but I'm getting there. Metformin has also helped me quite a bit, as I used to get nauseous when hungry. (when I crashed, I crashed HARD)

Hello my name is Nicole and I am a sugar addict. I love Pepsi, chocolate, swiss rolls, canned fruit in syrup, cookies, so forth and so on. I cant get enough, I have a REALLY hard time getting protein, because i dont like beans....and I am not a big meat eater. I know there are other sources of protein like peanut butter, and eggs.
Nicole

That's part of my problem too, I am not a big fan of many kinds of protein. Especially for breakfast - sometimes the thought of eggs in the morning makes me gag. And I'm sick of peanut butter. I do eat meat with my lunch and dinner usually but I never seem to be able to eat more than a few bites of it before I feel full. Yet I could shovel in carbs all day and not feel full! Grr!

Bonnie, Thats me. I tried the IR diet and its really simple to follow. You get pleanty to eat but I dont like red meat, I dont like pork, I dont like a lot of lunch meat and you can only eat chicken so many times a day. Also alot of protein can be HIGH in fat so theres the catch. As far as breakfast goes, I like bacon if its lean. I hate sausage and scrapple and pork rolls. I love eggs but I dont know if I can eat them EVERY Morning. I have tried protein bars and they are always chalky tasting to me.
LOL I guess I am a lost cause, because I cant eat things I dont like. I will literally get "Sick" at the thought of putting certain foods in my mouth.

My name is Sillie and I too am a sugar-aholic and a cereal-aholic. Cereal is the first thing I think about in the morning (after the need to pee) and not healthy cereal.....sugared cereal (Cocoa Krispies, Lucky Charms, Frosted Mini Wheats, etc.)
I crave sugar all day, especially cake-like products. I'm on 1500mg of Met but I haven't noticed any differences yet.
I really want to try to curb this, but I haven't been able to. Why is it they have re-hab for drug and alcohol addictions, but nothing for sugar addictions, except fat farms.
I do a protein shake for breakfast with added fruit. Don't know if that helps anyone.
