Question Supplements and Metformin?

Hi all,

Just joined. Good to hear that people have success with metformin! I got the prescription last May and only just decided I'd had enough of natural solutions. I'm 39, have tiny periods around the 5 week cycle but around 1999/2000 lost them completely for a while.

I have been taking herbs (agnus castus plus range of others to cope with blood sugar/mood swings/stress which seems to come along with bad PMS for increasing parts of my cycle as i get older). I am not particularly overweight but my weight fluctuates badly and I crave carbohydrates and sugar and have big appetite, love coffee and wine which i try to ration! Is there any hope for me??!!

My question is what have people have found works alongside Metformin? I don't want to take supplements that aren't necessary but I would love some advice. Also are most of you following GI diets and if so, what are the main dietary changes that have worked for you?

Sorry lots of questions but feel free to ask me any questions too!

Jo

I take a multi vitamin, just a regular chewy one. I'm also following a low GI Diet now, not that I think I've lost any weight on it yet.. my main dietary changes have been cutting out bread and swapping it for pitta bread. Increasing the intake of oats I have. Avoiding greasy food, takeouts and potatoes.. swapping regular potatoes for sweet potatoes. And having a lot of basmati rice.

Hope this helps.

Welcome to another UK Cyster! Hope to see you on the UK & Irish Cysters board.

Well apart from metformin and the clomid, i take folic acid and evening primrose one a day. I am also on a low calorie diet which has helped so far for me.

I take Vitex (Agnus Castus) with Metformin and my doctor says that is fine. As for diet, I've found Met has changed my diet, I can't stomach greasy or heavy foods anymore - which is a good thing. I find as long as I eat regularly and do not overdo sugar or grease I'm fine. I feel so much better now that I take Met. I hope it works for you!

Question Thanks, all useful tips

Hi, Well, maybe I'll continue the agnus castus, take a good vitamin and evening primrose and work on a few diet changes. Have you found that metformin improves PMS symptoms?

Cheers,
Jo

I just try to have 1 food from each food group every meal. I do still eat carbs, but I've been paying attention to what an "actual" serving is compared to what I've always eaten. Needless to say one of my servings was like 3 "actual" ones.

I tried a vitamin called "Rx Essentials for Metformin" because there was a try it free coupon in the paper and so far I have no complaints. It's pretty much just folic acid, B-12, and Magnesium I think. All things you need extra of when taking Met. I also take a multi vitamin (when I remember) but not with any regualrity. I think I"ll get some chewy ones like you do though.

I've found the most important thing for me and with Met is lots and lots of water. It seems it cause me to be in the bathroom either too much or not enough and the water helps.
