Default Surgery and Metformin

Anyone had surgery whilst on met?

I'm having surgery on my ear, and in the met information leaflet, it mentions you should stop taking it before, during and after surgery.

The nurse I spoke to said that it doesn't matter and I can continue taking it. So I'm really confused now.

Anyone had any advice on this?

Default I would talk to your Doctor

When I had my biopsy I had to quit taking it for only the day that I had the surgery to take it out. My mother had major surgery and had to quit taking it for over a month (she's diabetic too, I'm not).

Anyways, I asked my friend who is a pharmacist, she said it they recommend that you quit taking it because of an increased chance of going into lactic acidosis.

I suggest that you talk to your Dr about it. They will know what is best for what you are having done.

Good luck!

For my pituitay surgery, I quit taking met back in October. My doctor just put me back on it. I would ask your doctor/surgeon directly b/c they know what interactions will occur possibly during your surgery, good luck and you'll do just great with your surgery!!!

I agree. Ask your surgeon/doctor directly.

I'm having stomach surgery soon, and my RE was emphatic about me stopping met for 48 hours prior to surgery.

It may have to do with the type of surgery you're having, and the type of anesthesia, but DEFINITELY talk toy ur surgeon and doctor first.

I just had surgery on the 13th. My dr told me to stop taking the met 10 days before surgery (I actually stopped a lot sooner so I could drink for New Years ) and he told me to start it again about 4-5 days after surgery. I also suggest talking to your surgeon about it.
