Default A New Permanent Solution Using Vaser

OK, here's an interesting and informative story in a newspaper about a physician in Long Beach who is someone you all may want to know about. He's using Vaser ultrasound designed for liposuction to remove just the right sweat glands to turn off the faucet.

The text is below in case the paper takes the story down as they sometimes do.

Doctor Combats Excessive Sweating

By Kelly Garrison

Published: Friday, May 22, 2009 8:45 AM PDT

Years ago, Dr. Pearlman Hicks’s teenage son confronted him with what he called an embarrassing health predicament — excessive sweating.

The issue prompted Hicks, a plastic surgeon, to investigate possible cures for what he discovered was a condition known as hyperhidrosis. Today, the Long Beach doctor has reached the cutting edge of a new and developing technology that has the potential to offer a permanent solution for profuse underarm perspiration.

Most sufferers, he explained, deal with hyperhidrosis by layering their clothing. Alternative treatments, such as special antiperspirants and Botox injections, offer more temporary fixes, he said, but the condition ultimately returns and often impacts quality of life.

“It’s something that a lot of people have and are ashamed of,” he said.

People with hyperhidrosis sweat profusely and often and produce up to five times the average volume of sweat through their hands, underarms and other areas of the body. Research indicates it may be hereditary.

Using a VASER ultrasonic machine, Hicks sends sound waves into the skin to destroy sweat glands. The technique, he said, is minimally invasive with few side effects.

“Energy waves kill the glands,” he said. “We make a small incision, add saline fluid and, when the sound waves hit the bottom of the skin, it causes it to contract.”

The procedure lasts an hour, with patients receiving either a local or general anesthetic.

The most significant risk associated with the procedure is the possibility of soreness afterward from burning. In terms of its effectiveness, Hicks said he generally reduces each patient’s sweating by 50%. Hicks said he learned his technique from another doctor who had discovered the treatment. After learning about it, he adopted the treatment in his office.

Years later, Hicks’ son, along with nearly 100 other patients, have seen success through the surgery, he said. As of now, Hicks only will perform surgery under arms, as hands have too many nerve endings.

Surgery costs $3,500 to $4,500 per individual. Health insurance does not yet cover the procedure.

Hicks’ office is at 2360 Long Beach Blvd. and can be reached by calling 595-9493 or by visiting face.doctor.com

Default NBC News Segment on this

Go to YouTube and in the search window type in Dr. Pearlman Hicks, and see the KNBC in L.A. news segment. It's very good.

I am sweating like a pig right now, sitting here. I would love to try botox. Has anyone tried it and if so did it help?

Thumbs up

Hey guys,

I have this problem too and it's terrible. Since being diagnosed with PCOS and started my meds I feel like it's gotten worse. As for sweating under my arms that's been that way since I was about 13 years old and it's terrible. I recently saw a dermatologist and she prescribed Hypercare solution and it's been a life saver! The first week I put the solution under my arms every night and then twice a week. I was amazed after the very first day of using it. I went to the gym and sweated like a pig, as normal but when I got in my car I noticed there were no sweat rings under my arms. It was completely dry... pretty much the only place on my body! I'm thinking I'll bathe in it next lol. Anywho I highly recommend it.

I have hyperhydrosis in both my hands and feet. Doesn't matter if it's cold or hot indoors/outdoors. They are worse during the summer though. Somedays they are literally dripping all over the place and they usually swell to sausage size when they really get going during the summer. It's so embarrasing... it has turned me into a huge introvert. On the rare occasion they are not sweating, I find myself touching people! Weird I know...It seems like a lot of women with PCOS are suffering from Hyperhydrosis as well. I always wondered if there was a connection?

Anyway, I tried the Botox shots in my hands only. 150 injections, 75 in each hand (in one sitting). Yes, it hurt. I didn't cry or anything, but it hurt. Like getting a tattoo hurt. It didn't work for me. My insurance paid for it, I think I had a $30 co-pay. I can't remember if I had United Healthcare or Coventry insurance at the time. My insurance made me try the Certain Dri first. That didn't work either. It did however permanently wrinkle the skin on the back of my hands. My hands aged about 15yrs using the Certain Dri for about 2 weeks. You know what has worked? Swimming in a chlorinated pool. Usually they stop sweating for the rest of the day/night. I guess it's the chemicals that are in the pool?

Hey.

I have the same problem and it is a very humiliating feeling when I am sitting in my office, and sweat is dripping (literally) down my face... It did get worse after I started medication, I am currently on metformin, the only thing that helps, the influence of baby pills had on my body was so bad that I had to discontinue them...

I sweat like a pig too. My underarms are always wet, even when it's 20 degrees outside. In the summer, when it's humid, I am sweating the second after I get out of the shower. Even an ice cold one. It's awful. I ruin A LOT of shirts because my sweat turns "yellow". I also have very oily hair, and have to wash every day, once I start sweating, my hair along my scalp looks very dirty.

my armpits don't really sweat very much (i'd say less than most people, actually) but as soon as it's even a little bit hot/humid or when i do any sort of physical activity, i POUR sweat from my back and face. its funny to see that my back is totally soaked, when boys who are working twice as hard as me only have little droplets of sweat. it's really embarrassing. one thing that helps with back sweat, at least, is wearing a camisole underneath EVERYTHING (even tee shirts).

I sweat all the time too, but mine is from the metformin and drugs the Dr puts me on. I hate it and can understand your frustration!

My face. Oh my god, do I sweat from my face. That is the only place I sweat excessively from. Specifically from the bridge of my nose up into my hairline. And I can wipe the beads of sweat off my eyebrows and watch in the mirror as they come back less than a minute later.

I used to think it was because I am fat. I thought, "My body is working so hard just to hold itself up that I'm pouring sweat and I'm not even moving." Maybe this would be more likely if I sweated ALL OVER, not just my face. I haven't always been overweight, but my face has ALWAYS been sweaty. Hm. I figured it was something that I would just have to live with. Doesn't matter because I can't afford Botox anyway. What a weird (but logical) treatment.

My youngest son seems to sweat very excessively from his hands and feet. He's only 7, but he's been this way since he could walk. Genetics?

I thought I was the only one that sweat excessively! I never knew metformin could be the cause..and I am on 1000 mg 2x daily. I sweat like CRAZY from my face, so much that by the middle of the day I could probably use another hair washing. It's NUTS! My face isn't oily-it's just SWEATY! I don't really sweat much anywhere else...except for the past few months I have been noticing that I am sweating a lot under "the girls" and between my thigh and groin area (where the legs of my undies hit) I'm thinking it might be due to it just being summer, but who knows.

I have this problem as well..in my teens I always thought it was just because I was a sweaty person but after reading all of this I'm thinking its the PCOS... I've found after stopping my BCP the sweating has got even worse and I feel like i'm having hot flushes as well as underarm sweat
I just wear a lot of black now as any colours are my worst nightmare for sweat patches!

When my PCOS worsened a few years ago, I started sweating profusely, being on the right dose of BCP or Metformin is the only thing that stopped the sweating. If I miss 2 or more doses of Metformin, I start sweating again. It's a good reminder to take my pills!

I went to an orientation today. I'm going back to school this fall and this orientation was not optional. I can't even explain to you how embarrassed I was. Here I am, almost 30, sitting in a room full of kids, essentially (no offense), and I look and feel disgusting. I went home and changed my shirt during the lunch break, because there was just a ring of sweat around the neck from it rolling off my head. I was terrified that I would win one of their little raffles because I did not want to go up in front of 250 people to claim a prize.
