Default Swelling legs/feet?

Just started browsing here and saw somewhere that someone had swelling in their legs and feet.

Last September, I had a MAJOR problem with swelling in my feet. So bad that it hurt to walk and my shoes wouldn't fit. I'm only 22, overweight, but otherwise healthy other than PCOS for 8 years. I saw the doctor about it and he thought it was a heart problem. Got that checked out, my heart is perfect, so he said it was sodium. I took a diuretic for a few months and it helped it.

Now, I am getting it again and it hurts terribly. Could it be caused by PCOS? Possible diabetes? Is there something that I can have my doctor check when I see him this week to see if it's related?

What scares me about this: My mother has Type II Diabetes BAD and has diabetic neuropathy to where she can't walk without pain meds now. I have never been DXed with Diabetes, but am pretty sure it's headed that way. I want to make sure my doctor can catch it if it IS this, so that it doesn't get worse. Am I silly for thinking it's related or no?

Thanks

Hi. :-)

What kinds of meds are you taking? I've noticed that the 2 weeks out of the month when I have to take progesterone, my feet swell. Are you on bc? I had the same problem with several different kinds, depending on the hormone mix. (not on them now)

The odd thing is that before I was diagnosed, my feet and ankles used to swell even worse. Maybe you need to get on meds if you're not taking any?

Good luck fixing that, it's very annoying!

Well it cant hurt for you to get tested for diabetes!
i would go to the dr now while what ever it is, is active.

on a side note..
my mom gets swollen legs and sore, swollen feet b/c of an old car wreck.. She bought a pair of crocs to walk in and it helpped her so much that she cried.
not the fake drug store ones, the original ones- they are very different.

(((hugs))))

I have been on BC pills for 8 years now, that is the only "treatment" I have had. Now that I think of it, it actually started with the swelling when I switched BCPs late last year...I am on Triphasil right now. I want to as my doc about Metformin, and possibly go back to Ortho for the birth control side of it, instead of it being the only "treatment" I take.

Oh goodness, I LOVE MY CROCS! I wouldn't know what to do without these things. When I first had the swelling in September, I found the "Relief" Crocs online and bought them as my first ones. I wear them EVERY day, no joke. My in-laws bought me the "regular" pair in another color and they are OK when I need some variety, but the "Relief" ones are incredible. They are the only shoes I wear and I absolutely swear by them!

I have the same problem with ankles and leg swelling. It started about August last year. My diet/meds haven't changed. Its usually the days I work my office job. If you find any solution, please share!

i had the same problem. In june 2005 my feet started feeling funny.. i looked and they were swollen..legs too. It got so bad my feet turned red and purple. I had all kinds of tests and no one knew what was wrong. Then i went to my OB/GYN and thats when she tested me for PCOS. She figured that was it, because of all my other symptoms. She was right. I still swell every once in a while, but no where near as bad like when it first happened.

I too have the same problem. Caffine aggrevates mine. Since Caffine is a diuretic, if you are too dehydrated your body will "conserve" water and your legs can swell.

if you sit all day in an office job, my DR suggeted getting up and moving around throughout the day.

Also, regular exercise, walking, aerobics, etc. Help

Good luck, if anyone knows a cure all, let me know too!

I have the exact same problem! It gets really bad if I sit in my computer desk chair, even for just an hour.
I haven't got a solution, other than moving around and keeping hydrated, but my sympathies go out to all of you who have the problem too!

(I have a shoe addiction, and it makes shoe-shopping a nightmare!)

edited to add:
It started right before my Type 2 diabetes/PCOS diagnosis, and my doc thought it was a heart problem, too. He put me on Lasix and sent me for an echocardiogram, which turned out normal.

I work in an office too. What helps me is one of those big rubber exercise balls. I keep it under my cubicle, and use it for a footrest, and roll it around with my feet. It's really helped keep the swelling from sitting around all day to a minimum.
And of course getting up to walk around as much as possible.

Oh that's a really good idea! I may have to try that. I used to have a foot stool to semi-prop my feet up, but I can't find anything to do the trick now. The ball sounds great though and would keep me moving.

That is precisely what happened with me. My heart was fine, I was on Lasix and it helped a bit, but came back after a while.

Do y'all think it IS related directly to PCOS/IR?
