Swelling and Pain after Laproscopic surgery for cycts??
Near the end of July 07, I had Laproscopic surgery to take care of a cyst on my left tube. Now, that feels much better, but now I have a new problem. Ever since the day after the surgery I have been having pain in my abdomen (centered around my belly button) and also it has been swelling almost every day. I had denim shorts that I could take off without undoing the day before surgery and now they don't meet by like 10 inches. On top of that, I have actually LOST weight since my surgery. I am completely confused about this swelling and pain. I saw my OBGYN 3 times and then she finally gave up and said "its not from surgery-go see your regurlary dr" I have had a CAT scan done but nothing showed. When I went to my primary care physician, she definitely thinks that it was from surgery since I never had this problem before. She also doesn't know what it is and has set me up for an appt with a general surgen on Friday. Has anyone ever had something like this happen after having a cyst removed laproscopicly. I know that swelling for a few days is normal -- but not for this long.
If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I'm just hoping that I don't have to have another surgery because of the first.

Wow, that's rough. I have had several laparoscopic procedures and experienced something similar once.
The procedures I had performed by a GYN or RE involved placing the scope through the bellybutton and making a small incision in the pubic hair line. With these procedures I experience temporary swelling and bloating. It was quite noticable but only last about a week.
When I had my gallbladder removed, they did it laparoscopically. I had an incision in the bellybutton and three small probe punctures on the upper adbomen. It was with this surgery that I experienced prolonged abdominal swelling. It was bloated for what seemed like forever. I had to wear pants that had an elastic waist because none of my work trouser fit.
I hope they have an answer for you. I hate when doctors say it can't possibly be related to what they did. I'm glad your Primary care doc is sending you to a surgeon.
Take care, keep us posted on what they find out. I hope you feel better soon.

“A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow.”
Well I go see the general surgeon tomorrow afternoon. I hope it goes well and he can figure out why all the pain and swelling. I am just worried that he will have to put me in the hospital or do surgery. My dr had to switch me from hydrocodone to demerol this week and its still not doing much. I'm a teacher and I don't have sick days left because I used them up last year when my mother passed away. In fact some of my friends even had to donate days. Well at least its labor day weekend and if I do have to go in the hospital maybe I can be out by monday night and go back to teaching on tuesday.
Hope so!

Well general surgeon was no help. Looked at old CT said - looks ok to me and did bloodwork for Liver and that came out normal. Went back to my regular doctor because now I also can't eat -- I'm not naseaus but its like there is no room for food, i have NO energy and TMI can't hardly pee. She did CBC and is sending me to gastrointerologist for endoscopy. Maybe they'll be able to figure it out. I feel like crap and can barely walk from point a to b because of lack of energy - since i can't eat. Practically living on gatorade. Was also drinking protien shakes but now having problems with them too. Any suggestions?
Thanks yall

Well after many test and months pf pain, my doctors have finally figured it out. On tuesday, my gastrointerologist called me and informed me that I have Gastroparesis. It means that my stomach does not digest food properly because the muscles are not contrating - sorta like it is paralyzed. I have to go on a very restritive diet. Low to no fiber. No raw fruits and veggies and there are some fruits and veggies I can't have no matter what. And I have to go on a med thats not FDA approved so I have to get it in CA. But now I at least know what is going on and hopefully will begin to improve.
Thanks to those of you who responded.

did you ever have difficulty eating in the past? do you think you have always had it but it came and went until it got bad enough? or do you think it was a result of the surgery...
im going in for an ultrasound on tuesday cause i've been having some pain and the dr. mentioned surgery. sounds scary.
