I started Met a week ago Monday, and in the first few days I got the nausea and the frequent bathroom trips, but now for the past two days or so I've got the opposite reaction... no potty trips. Anyone else run into this? What did you do?
Oh I still have the nausea and loss of appetite though.
I just started taking Met 3 weeks ago, the first week I had no side effects. Now I have the frequent bathroom trips, and bad nausea. I even passed out this weekend and they said it was low blood sugar. I'm debating on whether to stay on or not. I hope this passes!
I went to a diabetic class, recommended by my endo, even though I'm not diabetic. They gave me a free blood sugar meter and I can test my sugar to see if my nausea is being brought on by the metformin, or real blood sugar, so I know to eat a hard candy or something else to take care of it. It's been REALLY helpful and I take it with me everywhere just in case.
Met can also cause constipation, if it lasts too long I'd take some exlax or call your doctor. The side effects do pass. Really the first 500mg was the worst for me, I was sick as a dog. Now that I just went from 1000mg up to 2000mg the other day, I still have nausea but I can manage it better. ICE COLD water really really helps my nausea and I will still munch on hard candies (sugar free) to help with the nasty metallic taste in my mouth that leads to nausea.

Kim- I didn't think of the nausea being caused by blood sugar, I guess that really is possible. It's very interesting to me that I was a candy fiend before Met. and since I started I can take it or leave it, most of the time it's the leave it. Maybe the changes in my eating and the comb. with Met. my sugar is going wanky.
Definitly a possibility. Does your doctor check it? Do you go to an endocronologist? I'd look into it. It's not often anymore that my sugar goes too low thankfully, because I've learned how to eat and what works for me. Still a struggle every day though.

My doc only checked my blood sugar before I started the Met. I haven't seen an endo. my primary doc has been taking care of it so far. Maybe I need to ask about it.

If you aren't going to the potty, try eating something like fiber cereal or lots of fruits (except bananas) and veggies. You can even get fiber pills, so all you have to do is swallow a pill and it should help.
