Hi I wondered if anyone who has switched from taking multi doses of Met to taking the extended release had to re-adjust? I have been taking 500 mg. 3X a day for a year, and my Dr. is switching me to 2000mg in xr form. I am afraid of going through the awful adjustment period again. Any experience with this? Thanks!
I would like the answer to this one also. My doctor just switched mine today to the xr, and would like to know the difference between the metformin and the xr.

I completely agree. My doctor switched me to XR because i just wasnt handling the side effects of the regular met. Since then ive been able to increase my dose (which was the plan all along) without any problems, which wasnt even an option on the regular met as it made me so sick.

XR is easier to take. My doctor switched me because I couldn't adjust to the stomach problems. XR was better, but still too hard on my sensitive tummy. I ended up switching to Avandia later. Now I'm not taking anything (AMA). I need to start again.
I just started Met for the first time last night and my doctor immediately put me on XR. I think I have the best doctor in the world. I've done lots of research on this and other drugs and it just seems to make sense that the XR is the way to go.
I got switched to the ER, b/c I kept forgetting to take my afternoon dose of met (oops!), so I told her we had to change something. My Dr. put me on two 500mg ER in the am & one 500mg ER in the evening. My amount didn't change, but my dosage time did. I noticed a difference almost right away, though, as far as feeling more "even", but that could be b/c I was actually remembering every dose every day. The ER has been much easier on my tummy, too.

There are many docs who will actually lower the dosage of Met when switching from regular to ER, and the maximum safe dosage changes from 2500 mg for regular to 2000 mg for ER. I have never been able to find any reason for this, though.
When I switched from regular Met to ER, my dosage remained at 2000 mg.

Met 2000mg since 2001, started Glucophage XR 4/22/04, then switched to Met ER 6/04; also: multi, Vit. C, Vit. E, B12/folic acid combo, fish oil & borage oil combo, garlic capsules, cinnamon, Vitex, calcium with magnesium/zinc, biotin, CoQ10, selenium, iron
Other meds: Verapamil and Altace(for blood pressure)
Started laser hair removal 7/29/03, completed 3/04 (it works!)
UAE for fibroid 3/24/03 and 3/16/04
The reason I had to stop Metformin was because it caused severe bloating and constipation.
I know that is an unusal side effect, so I'm wondering if the xr is easier on the digestive system for those who have the opposite effect, would xr ease my type of side effects?
