symptoms if I'm taking too much thyroid supplement?
Today is my first day on thyroid supplement. My PCP told me to watch for symptoms that the amount she gave me is too much so we can adjust it if necessary. Unfortunately I left the insert from the medicine at home and now I'm afraid every little thing means I'm dying. Can someone tell me what symptoms I should be watching for?
Side effects are rare when thyroid medication is taken at the correct dosage. However, taking too much medication or increasing the dosage too quickly may lead to overstimulation of the thyroid gland.
Symptoms of overstimulation may include:
Changes in appetite, diarrhea, fever, headache, increased heart rate, irritability, nausea, nervousness, sleeplessness, sweating, weight loss
So, you may feel like you are dying but your are not.
If you feel worse from taking thyroid medication it may be an indication of adrenal fatigue.
Okay, so I now realize it was dumb for me to be looking for symptoms of too high a dose of medicine the first day I started taking it.
It's been a week and a half now and I do, in fact, think I might be on too high a dose. I haven't had any clearcut symptoms, but I just feel a tiny bit shaky and I think my heart rate might be up a bit, but I haven't really felt it racing. I don't know for sure whether I'm just getting used to the medicine and don't want to decrease the dose if I don't need to because then it might be hard to get them to increase it again.
Gezza, I don't mean to pry, but did you give birth to all five of your children? Did you get pg without intervention? I notice you weren't diagnosed yet when they were born and if you had PCOS and hypothyroid and had five kids fairly easily it gives me hope (not TTC yet, but just thinking about it already).

Saiph - Your not prying. Yes I did give birth to all 5 children. I was very fortunate that I was having regular cycles - but they were always longer eg 5 weeks. So I think the PCOS was always there but the androgen levels were prob lowish.
The hypo (Hashi's) was diagnosed fairly recently as I was having severe fatigue - Dr's said I had chronic fatigue - but I wasnt willing to live under that label and did some dr shopping. Eventually I found some Drs who knew what I was dealing with. I also have adrenal fatigue which I am having meds for.
Self education is I think your only weapon in this battle as so little of the medical prof is up to date on any of the above. A good site that might be helpful for you is : Stop The Thyroid Madness - http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/
I am still on a steep learning curve eg I am about to start having natural salt and using organic coconut oil to cook with. These small things can make a big difference to our health esp when we are dealing with hormone/metabolic stuff.
Feel free to ask any questions - thats how you learn. All the best on your journey to good health and starting a family(when your ready).
