Hello Fellow Cysters!
First, let me say how thrilled I am to have found this community! After thinking for ~10 years that I just had "crappy hormone luck", I was dx with PCOS and feel hopeful for the first time.
My question is this: What are the physical symptoms of IR that you find you have? (ie cravings, shakiness, feeling spaced-out, etc...)
I'm new to the term IR and I am just wondering which of my many fun maladies I may see improve with treatment for my PCOS.
Many thanks for the time you took to read this. I am so happy to be joining your community.
Here is my handy dandy list of IR symptoms. Not everybody with IR has every symptom, but as the IR worsens, more symptoms may appear.
Constant tiredness, or feeling like you've been hit by a truck, even after a good night's sleep. Feeling exhausted when you wake after a full nights sleep, or having to nap during the day to get thru the day.
Acanthosis Nigricans - Dark patches usually found in the creases under your arms, on the back of your neck and at your groin. You may also see a darkening of skin under your breasts, at the waist and elbows.
Skin tags
Hypoglycemia - getting shaky, dizzy, tired, confused when you go too long without eating or one or two hours after eating
Feeling hungry all the time
Central obesity - aka belly fat or being apple shaped often with thin arms and legs
Oily skin & hair
Acne
High testosterone - which causes male pattern baldness (hair loss at temples and top of head) or overall thinning hair. It also causes hirsutism (hair where girls don't want it).
Thin lips - I've only read this symptom in one place, but it was certainly true of me. Once I started Met they returned to a plumper size. It might be related to the high testosterone.
A feeling like "brain fog"...being unable to concentrate or being forgetful
Feeling of food lying in your stomach for hours
Slow or no weight loss after religiously dieting and exercise
Polycystic ovaries
High blood lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides)
High cortisol
Irregular periods (too few, too many, unpredictable, etc.)
Who has the highest risk for being IR?
People with a family history of diabetes, who experienced gestational diabetes, had large babies or have American Indian ancestry. Also, the more overweight you are, the worse your IR is likely be. Everybody gets more IR as they age.
JosieFB: i can relate to every one of the symptoms you mentioned. it makes me sad thinking about all the "life" i missed out on because of IR and pcos. this all started during my teens and it has taken me till now at 24, to get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. those were supposed to have been the best years
i have most of these symptons, wot meds are available to control this.my oily skin and hair and excess hirtuism seem to be getting out of control, and i have most of these other symptons, but im also ttc, can the doc prescribe anything?
jo xx

Met helped my oily skin, and made the hair grow back at my temples. I also think it stopped the development of more dark hair on my face. It normally does not get rid of existing dark hair. You can take Met while TTC. In fact, some people take it all the way through pregnancy to lessen the risk of miscarriage due to hormonal issues. I think I've heard there are issues in the UK about using a prescription drug for a use other than what it is approved for. Met is approved for diabetes, not IR / PCOS. It is used extensively in the US to help control IR symptoms.

Well, my husband has 2 and 1/2 of those risks. He is part Native from both of his parents, family history of diabetes and was the CAUSE of getational diabetes.
Yep, for years we knew he had problems, but went about taking care of it the wrong way. My diagnosis was the best thing for him actually. Now we know how to take care of his blood sugar issues too.

I agree Bec, I'm 25 now and wondering why I feel and act so much older than my years. People often mistake me for being about 5 years older than I always am. Good info Josie, I come from a strong background of Native American ancestry, was born 8lbs. 0oz., and my mother is diabetic! Plus she has a lopsided womb, and had a partial hysterectomy when I was around 6 I think. She'd spent all those years suffering from too heavy periods..Doc would put her on bcp and she'd not have a period..then she'd get off of them.....the cycle would be heavy again....finally, she'd had enough!
