are brown patches on the skin a symptom? i have some on my face which i first attributed to the sun. however, i notice that i have brown patches on my inner thigh, back of legs as well where i do not get sun. though they are still faint.
please share things that you know about being IR. what other symptoms are there? are the brown patches reversible once i have my insulin levels under control again? what measures, apart from medication, can i take to prevent it from getting worse?
lately for almost a month now, my throat has been hurting too. do you know what it could be? it is not sore but hurting. although not too painful that it is debilitating.
I was told that a literal "ring around the neck" which could turn brown and if untreated even black and will not go back to the origional skin tone. Luckily mine was caught in time. i'm not sure but hypothyroid also may be a symptom of this as well...I have been cursed with both.

The symptoms of IR can be different for every person, I would suggest u grab a good book on the subject (there are several out there now - finally!) and settle back in a comfy chair and start reading lol.
I can tell u that the symptoms of IR very greatly depending on the severity in the individual and if left untreated there is a high likelyhood of IR developing into diabetes...it is often called "Pre-diabetes" the brown patches can also be a pre-cursor to diabetes as well......
There are a couple of medications out there used to treat IR the most famous of which is Glucophage (metformin), the side-effects of Gluc can be pretty severe so some women are opting for other meds or even trying just diet and/or natural remedies to help treat thier condition.. (personally I am doing all 3 at this point)
So good luck in ur search for knowledge, the best u can do right now is read, read, read....many of us have found that we are educating our doctors in this area since it is such a relatively new area of medicine.

hirishigem - how did you treat the brown patches and what are the results of your treatment? where they reversible on their own if i start taking met?
sweeter - are there any books in particular that you could recommend? what are the harsh side effects of taking met?
thanks again for your replies. i will ask my doctor to test me for IR. what kinds of tests apart from the ones already listed here should i ask to be tested for to determine IR?
meantime, i will start researching on my own and will share w/ you when i find something.
